In case you weren’t following every word of my live blog, former Orange County Board of Education Trustee Long Pham is officially jumping into the SD-34 race.
Just last week our blogger, Dominus, covered SD-34 and speculated on the possibility of a Pham candidacy. Other likely SD-34 Republican candidates are Supervisor Janet Nguyen and former Assemblyman Jim Silva. Rancho Santiago Community College District Trustee and former Assemblyman Jose Solorio will likely represent the Democrats, though Garden Grove Planning Commissioner Joe Dovinh may jump in.
More on this in the coming weeks and months ahead, but it’s clear the SD-34 games have begun.

Even though the 2012 Presidential Election just ended a few months ago, many candidates are already putting the pieces together for the next campaign.
In 2014, I suspect there will only be two competitive state legislative races in Orange County: SD 34 (Correa) and AD 65 (Quirk-Silva). In this post, I will focus on SD 34 and save AD 65 for another day.
By any standard measures, SD 34 is a swing district. Democrats outnumbered Republicans by less than a percentage point. The district voted heavily in favor of Proposition 8. The incumbent Lou Correa is termed-out in 2014.
Here is my analysis of this race:
REPUBLICAN FIELD
The most active candidate on the Republican side is Supervisor Janet Nguyen. She started plotting for this seat back in 2011 when she endorsed Long Beach Councilman Gary DeLong for Congress over Los Alamitos Councilman Troy Edgar in exchange for the support of LA Supervisor Don Knabe.
You may wonder why is the support of Don Knabe important? It is because the new SD 34 have a sizable portion of Los Angeles.
Janet also lucked-out when then-campaign treasurer Kindee Durkee cleaned out the accounts of Senator Lou Correa and Assemblyman Jose Solorio. One of these two politicians were supposed to challenge Janet in 2012. Instead, the 1st District Supervisor faced a token candidate and didn’t have to spend a whole lot of money for her re-election. Janet could be sitting on $300,000 – $350,000 right now.
Another Republican candidate in this race is former Assemblyman Jim Silva. I say potential because Jim is still wishy-washy about it. Sure he is sitting on top of $400,000 but the idea of running in a brutal primary then go through a general election doesn’t sit well with Jim. If anything, Jim wants to be drafted by the GOP establishment to run.
Jim may end up running after all, depending on the field.
Aside from these two Republicans, we have another one thinking about it – Long Pham. The former Orange County Board of Education member and nuclear engineer who spent $100,000 of his personal money on a failed assembly campaign is talking to people about a potential run for SD 34. Long have loyal followers in the Vietnamese community. He just need to hire a better campaign consultant if he is to make another run at public office.
DEMOCRATIC FIELD
The front runner on the Democratic side is Jose Solorio, a trustee of the Rancho Santiago Community College District. As a government consultant, Jose will have plenty of time and flexibility to campaign in this district. I’m not sure how much money he is sitting on but financial resources should not be a problem if Jose is the only Democrat in the race. Money from Sacramento will just flow into this war chest.
Jose’s best bet is to make it into the general November election where more Democrats are likely to vote. Currently, I see a big problem for Jose – the person he is trying to succeed.
It is in Lou Correa’s interest to have Janet win the 34 SD in 2014 so that it will trigger a special election in 2015 for her supervisorial seat. Lou and his staff will work behind the scene to help Janet (they can’t do it publicly).
The other Democrat in this race is former Garden Grove planning commissioner Joe Dovinh. Joe likes to run. Does he have a chance of winning? Sure, if he can make it through the primary with a Republican opponent. It’s going to take a lot for Joe not to run and Janet knows it.
Later this week I will write about AD 65 and the likely Republican contender for this seat against incumbent Democrat Sharon Quirk-Silva.

Chris Nguyen did a great job putting together a local database of all party affiliations for candidates running for local office. I thought that I would take the time to expand on his post and show a database of all Orange County Councilmembers (Also OC Board of Supervisors) that will be serving on City Councils starting next month and what party they are affiliated with.
Please note that a couple of races could potentially change based on a close finish and not all votes being counted. This post will be added to our website in a permanent tab that we will be creating at the top of the site.

According to the Orange County Registrar of Voters, Assemblyman Jose Solorio (D-Santa Ana) has pulled papers for the Rancho Santiago Community College District Trustee Area 1. (There is no incumbent, as the RSCCD board recently switched from a multi-member three-area at-large election system to a vote-by-area system, but drew three incumbents into Area 5, with Brian Conley choosing to retire in June, leaving David Chapel and Mark McLoughlin to duke it out in Area 5.)
Solorio had been rumored for months to be interested in the RSCCD seat after the Bernie Madoff of California Democrats, Kinde Durkee, stole $700,000+ from Solorio, putting an end to his bid to challenge Supervisor Janet Nguyen (R-Garden Grove). Between his Assembly campaign committee and a ballot measure committee, Solorio has over $200,000 cash on hand.
Due to the fact there are no contribution limits for the college board seat in Rancho Santiago, Solorio can transfer the entire $200,000 to his RSCCD account without raising another penny.
Santa Ana LULAC President Zeke Hernandez is rumored to be Solorio’s top challenger.
Will union anger at Solorio’s endorsement of Tom Daly for Assembly result in enormous contributions to Hernandez for college board? (Remember, there are no contribution limits, so they can give all the money to Hernandez instead of doing an IE.)
Trustee Area 1’s eastern border follows Main Street in Santa Ana from 17th Street down to the 55 Freeway. Its southern border is the Santa Ana city limit. Its far northern border is 17th Street. Its western border is a zig-zag involving Flower Street from 17th Street to 1st Street, Bristol Street from 1st Street to St. Andrew Place, Rene Drive from St. Andrew Place to Warner Avenue, and roughly Raitt Street from Warner Avenue to the city limit.

Sacramento Mayoral Candidate Leonard Padilla,
Proudly Endorsed by Death Row’s Speed Freak Killer, Wesley Shermantine
A strange tale from over the weekend…
Sacramento Mayoral Candidate Leonard Padilla, who is one of three candidates challenging Mayor Kevin Johnson‘s re-election bid, is proudly announcing his endorsement by Wesley Shermantine, who is half of the serial killer duo known as the Speed Freak Killers and currently sits on death row.
Padilla told Sacramento’s Fox40: “When you have a guy on death row endorsing you, you have to be somewhat proud of that.”
Why does he think that? Well, he stated, “If I go out here to the unions, or if I go to the firemen, and ask for their endorsement, they’re going to want something in return. I mean, this man, he cannot ask for anything in return.”
Well, I guess technically, he’s right that he won’t be beholden to any special interests.
On the potential drawback of the serial killer endorsement, he said, “I don’t think it’ll have any backlash because there’s nothing about the man that’s a secret.”
That’s ridiculous. The backlash is because of what’s known about him.
Padilla even told Fox 40 he was considering making a commercial about Serial Killer Shermantine’s endorsement.
I’m going to name the Padilla for Mayor 2012 campaign the winner of my “Dumbest Campaign Strategy Ever” award.
This is clearly a publicity stunt, but the “Any press is good press” expression has its limits. He will definitely lose many of what few votes he had, and I’m not sure if this will attract any new business for his bail bondsman or bounty hunter operations. I would think a bounty hunter wouldn’t want publicity. I would also think even those seeking the services of a bail bondsman would hesitate at using someone backed by a serial killer.
(Readers, feel free to insert a bad Sacramento joke here.)
Padilla came in 58th out of 135 candidates for Governor in the 2003 recall. Padilla came in 4th out of 4 in the 2004 Sacramento mayoral primary and came in 3rd out of 5 in the 2008 Sacramento mayoral primary (behind only Johnson and then-Mayor Heather Fargo).
I’m still waiting for the Association of Ketchup Thieves to Endorse Steve Rocco for Supervisor and the appropriate independent expenditure on behalf of Janet Nguyen by Heinz, Hunt’s, and other ketchup manufacturers.

AD 72 not only has one of the most hotly contested races for Assembly but it also has one of the most hotly contested Central Committee races.

The candidates include:
Janet Nguyen– She is currently the Orange County Supervisor from the 1st District and an incumbent on the Central Committee too. *Incumbent.
John W. Briscoe– John W. Briscoe is President of the Fountain Valley Republican Assembly and a CRA State Officer. He is also a CPA on the Orange County Property Tax Appeals board and a past Chairman of the Fountain Valley Planning Commission. (He is not Ocean View School District’s John F. Briscoe.)
Mark McCurdy– He is currently an elected member of the Fountain Valley Council and is serving as the Mayor Pro Tem. Also he is an incumbent on the Central Committee. *Incumbent.
Dennis R. Catron– I am not sure if it is the same person but according to a bit of research that I did a Dennis Catron used to be the Vice-Chairman of the OC GOP back in 1986.
Brian Hoops– According to some research, I couldn’t quite pinpoint it but their was a Brian Hoop linked to a Tea Party meet-up group.
Matthew Harper– An elected member of the Huntington Beach City Council nd current candidate for the 72nd Assembly District seat. *Incumbent.
Dean Grose– He s a former member of the Los Alamitos City Council who got into some hot water for his watermelon e-mail that he sent out. *Incumbent.
Kermit Marsh– He is a former member of the Westminster CIty Council who left because he chose to do so, not because of term limits or losing an election. *Incumbent.
Patrick Dooley– The second of the brothers Dooley to pull papers for this office. He currently has a profile up on the Campaign For Liberty website as well.
Michael Gates– I could find no information on him. He is listed as a Businessman/Attorney on the ballot.
Patricia Ross– Although I was unable to find any political information out about her, she is involved in charity work with local schools.
Diane A. Lenning– She is a perennial candidate for the office of California State Superintendent of Public Instruction.
Steve A. Nagel– Currently an elected member of the Fountain Valley City Council and the OC GOP Central Committee. *Incumbent.
Mary Tuong Van Pham– This is the wife of Assembly candidate Long Pham. She will definitely help boost the name ID for Long Pham.
The factors at play- In these races the most important factor is luck. What I examined when determining who would win was name ID, ballot designation, ballot placement, district statistics.
Looking at all the factors at play in this district I believe that the 6 winning candidates (In no particular order) will be:
1. Janet Nguyen
2. Kermit Marsh
3. Steve Nagel
4. Mark McCurdy
5. Matthew Harper
6. John W. Briscoe

One of the major flaws that I have found in Prop 14 is the way t moves candidates from June to November. As an example, if Troy Edgar was running for Supervisor with the same field that he had in the Assembly race, and received over 50% of the vote he would win and no November election would take place.

However, if that same race was to take place for a seat in the California State Assembly the race under the new Prop 14 rules even if a candidate received only 1 vote they would still advance to November in a head to head race. This therefore creates a number of races that essentially are glorified polls in June.
Races that would fall under this category include:
SD 29- A race between State Senator and Workers Rights Attorney Greg Diamond. I am hoping that Huff wins this race based on his policy decisions (Even though he is a bit of a squish on certain issues.). Greg Diamond is an Orange Juice blogger, a very smart man (he will let you know it, too) with an education that would rival my fellow blogger Chris Nguyen, and his best quality is that he reads this blog.
SD 37- This race is between sitting Senator Mimi Walters and perennial candidate Steve Young. Walter s is running for reelection after having defeated Harry Sidhu in her first race for Senate. Steve Young appears willing to run for any seat as I believe this is the 3rd campaign I have seen him run.
AD 55- Curt Hagman against Greg Fritchle. This race is a true yawner as it involves a district that covers Orange, Los Angeles, and San Bernardino. Hagman is a former Chino Hills City Councilman that defeated Larry Dick for this seat back in 2008. He is now running for his last term in the Assembly. (Did I mention that I am happy to have Don Wagner as my Assemblyman).
AD 65- Chris Norby is running against Sharon Quirk-Silva for this seat. This race actually does matter in June, despite the fact that both candidates will advance to November. If Quirk-Silva does well in June, we could see some more Democratic resources be poured into this race. It is important for Norby to crush her in June.
AD 68- Assemblyman Don Wagner is running against perennial candidate Christina Avalos. The new AD 68 is pretty awesome and a huge step up for Anaheim Hills from the old AD 60. Wagner is in probably the safest seat for any Republican Assembly member in California, although I may be wrong on this particular statistic.
AD 73- This one will be interesting to watch in terms of the mail that gets sent out with Assemblywoman Diane Harkey facing off against infamous Capistrano Unified School District teacher James Corbett. The question comes down to whether or not mail gets sent out in June, or if it is held off until the November election.
1st Supervisorial District- Some of you may think that you have caught me slipping up, as this race will be decided in June. However read the title and you will understand. This race will be a good one to chuckle over. Rocco is best known for his conspiracy that he is part of a murder plot concocted by Albertsons, Smokecraft Sausage, and Kodak.
I would say to sit back and enjoy watching the races to see who wins, but in this case nobody actually wins. This is with the obvious exception of the 1st Supervisorial District.

In a shocking turn of events, candidate for Orange County Supervisor Steve Rocco is expected to benefit from numerous independent expenditures. The independent expenditures are expected to come from the Heinz Ketchup Company. Candidates in the 3rd District race Todd Spitzer and Deborah Pauly are both disappointed that Heinz will not be picking a side in this race.
The main reason for Rocco getting the support is his willingness to spell the product name as ketchup and not catsup.
However, concerned about Rocco being controlled by the special interest group, Kraft foods has apparently dumped money into an I.E. account to help support Janet Nguyen.
