RINO Witch-Hunt Against Placentia’s Conservative Yamaguchi?

Posted by Former Blogger Chris Emami on August 26, 2013

Jeremy YamaguchiThere is a weird controversy that has been taking place in Placentia this summer. Councilman Jeremy Yamaguchi is being attacked for his role in one of the City of Placentia’s concerts in the park. Basically, Yamaguchi is being accused of having a conflict of interest with his status as a Councilman and his activities as a VOLUNTEER for the City.

The issue really is much ado about nothing: there is no kind of financial conflict of interest that took place because volunteers inherently have no financial interest.

Yamaguchi has worked for companies that have provided sound services for bands that participate in the concerts in the park and Yamaguchi has been providing his services to the City as a VOLUNTEER. I think it is rather refreshing for a Councilmember to provide volunteer services that don’t involve simply showing up at an event, smiling, waving, and/or gracing everybody with their presence.

According to a memo from Placentia’s city attorney quoted by the Orange County Register:

“In summary, we cannot state with certainty that conflict of interest laws have been violated; however, Mr. Yamaguchi’s income history, coupled with his activities as a volunteer, could lead one to believe that an appearance of a conflict exists.”

What a strange quote.  The city attorney basically says, “We can’t find a conflict but somebody might think there’s a conflict.”

Yamaguchi’s activities as a volunteer should have no effect on what he can and/or cannot do as a City Councilmember in the City of Placentia. If he is not profiting in any way financially, I don’t see what the issue is.

One thing that caused me to raise an eyebrow is the fact that Yamaguchi is currently the conservative minority on the Placentia City Council along with Councilman Chad Wanke. The non-conservative majority of Scott Nelson, Connie Underhill, and Joe Aguirre are all technically registered Republicans.

More often than not, when city staff and a Council majority are questioned, they don’t like it.  This sometimes leads to efforts to try to discredit the dissenters by making them look bad at both Council meetings and in the media.  I’m not sure if this is the case in Placentia, but where there’s smoke, there’s usually fire.

What I do know for certain is that Jeremy Yamaguchi has been an excellent vote on the Placentia City Council and obviously cares about his community. People like Yamaguchi should be applauded for their efforts and not dragged over the coals.

Republican, Democrat, Independent??? The Partisan Affiliations of Everyone Holding Office In Orange County

Posted by Former Blogger Chris Emami on March 22, 2013

I was working on a database of the part affiliation of all Orange County local elected officials. Finally, I have completed the project with all of the special districts and county seats being added. I also fixed some errors in the previous versions (here, here, and here) and have combined the database into one post.

We have added a button on the menu bar for our readers to always be able to access this database and use it for whatever research/political needs that they may have. Due to the length of th epost you are going to have to click the below link to read the rest of the post.

2012 City Council Party Affiliation Post

Posted by Former Blogger Chris Emami on November 14, 2012

Chris Nguyen did a great job putting together a local database of all party affiliations for candidates running for local office. I thought that I would take the time to expand on his post and show a database of all Orange County Councilmembers (Also OC Board of Supervisors) that will be serving on City Councils starting next month and what party they are affiliated with.

Please note that a couple of races could potentially change based on a close finish and not all votes being counted. This post will be added to our website in a permanent tab that we will be creating at the top of the site.

Here is the database: Read the rest of this entry »

Former Placentia Councilman Greg Sowards & Wife Jo Ann Pull Papers for Simultaneous Bids for Office

In 2010, Placentia City Councilman Greg Sowards lost his re-election bid to elected City Treasurer Chad Wanke by 3.9%.  (In the race for two seats, Councilman Joe Aguirre won 23.9% of the vote, Wanke 23.3%, Sowards 19.4%, and three other candidates split the remainder of the vote.)  The Placentia Council then appointed Craig Green as Treasurer to fill the vacancy left when Wanke joined the Council.

On Monday, July 16, the first day of the filing period, Green pulled papers to run for re-election as Placentia City Treasurer.  The following day, Sowards pulled papers to challenge Green for Treasurer.  Then yesterday, Jo Ann Sowards (wife of Greg Sowards), pulled papers to run for the Placentia Library District Board of Trustees.  Incumbent Library Trustee Richard DeVecchio has already filed while recently appointed incumbent Gayle Carline has pulled papers.  Incumbent Jean Turner has not yet pulled papers.

How will Placentia voters take a husband and wife running for two offices simultaneously?  Particularly, when neither one of them is an incumbent.  If Green, DeVecchio, Carline, and Turner all file for re-election, will Placentians be willing to vote for a husband-and-wife team of challengers?  If one of the incumbents does not file, will one Sowards spouse be able to ride the coattails of the other spouse into office?  How much attention will there be for the campaigns for Placentia City Treasurer and Placentia Library Board?  How do you even campaign for City Treasurer or Library Board?  The Sowards family has just made Placentia’s November elections interesting to watch.
