Chris Nguyen posted a humongous grid of endorsements that broke down all the major organizations and what candidates they endorsed for non-partisan offices in Orange County. You can take a look at his humongous grid of endorsements here. As a follow-up I have done the math on how the endorsed candidates fared in the Tuesday election and have given credit to an organization for endorsing a candidate that either won outright or advanced to the November election.

Here is a guide to the abbreviations: OC GOP = Republican Party of Orange County, DPOC = Democratic Party of Orange County, CRA = California Republican Assembly, HJTA = Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association, CWLA = California Women’s Leadership Association, OC Tax = Orange County Taxpayers Association, OCBC = Orange County Business Council, and CTA = California Teachers Association.
Anybody that got 75% and higher can be considered an organization with a valuable endorsement but the big winners from this election cycle were the California Women’s Leadership Association (Orange County Chapter) and the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association both of which managed to endorse no losers.

One of our most popular posts from the November 2012 General Election was “Humongous Grid of Endorsements,” so we’re back this election with the Giant Grid of Endorsements for the June 2014 Primary Election.
I did abbreviate for some groups, so OC GOP = Republican Party of Orange County, DPOC = Democratic Party of Orange County, CRA = California Republican Assembly, HJTA = Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association, CWLA = California Women’s Leadership Association, OC Tax = Orange County Taxpayers Association, OCBC = Orange County Business Council, and CTA = California Teachers Association.
If you’re particularly interested in a group, click their name to view their endorsements on their web site. You can learn more about the group there, such as HJTA being the state’s leading taxpayer advocate group or Women in Leadership being a single-issue group with the sole goal of electing “pro-choice women candidates to local, regional and state-wide office who support keeping abortion legal.” (In light of their mission, does anyone else find it odd that Women in Leadership’s two endorsements on this grid are both for school board?)
Candidates in each race are listed in alphabetical order by last name, except incumbents got listed first in their respective races. Party affiliations are listed except for judicial candidates Thomas Martin and Wayne Philips, as I could not tell their affiliation from the voter database (common names combined with obscure judicial races make figuring out their affiliations challenging).
Whether you love a group and want to vote with their endorsements or hate a group and want to vote against their endorsements, here are the endorsements for county offices and school board, along with local ballot measures:

One of the important races on the June 3rd ballot is for the Orange County Supervisor, 5th District which is basically south Orange County. Of the candidates in that race, I am supporting Laguna Niguel City Councilman Robert Ming (Robert Ming). In the decade plus that I have known Robert, he has been a consistent movement conservative who judges decisions he makes on the City Council through the prism of questions such as 1. Is this something the Government should even be doing in the first place (instead of private enterprise), 2. is it Constitutional? and 3. is it the best deal for the taxpayers? Whenever possible and legal Robert Ming (who is an attorney by profession) seeks to have government outsource functions to private contractors rather than have in-house employees hired with the attendant salaries, retirement benefits and retiree health care costs burdening the taxpayers. He is also not in favor of government choosing winners and losers at the taxpayers’ expense (also known as “crony capitalism” which favors the politician’s friends and supporters). Robert believes that when the government does business with private enterprise, all parties should play by the same rules and the government should remain neutral with the taxpayers getting the maximum benefit from open and fair competition.
While on the City Council Robert’s city built Laguna Niguel’s City Hall on time, under budget and for cash (no debt, bonds or loans of any kind). When he was on the Board of the Orange County Vector Control agency, he insisted on transparency by the senior management that revealed wasteful spending by the Agency and the resignation of the former Executive Director. Robert Ming was one of the main leaders in forming the Association of California Cities Orange County to counter the big government left leaning League of Cities. He currently is the chairman of the ACCOC’s committee on pension reform.
Several years ago, Robert and I co-founded a public policy ministry at our church to help parishioners understand matters of public policy that are facing them in votes they are being asked to cast at elections.
In all of the decisions and situations (personal and as an elected leader) I have seen Robert in, he has always been consistent and honorable in his decision-making. He will make an excellent choice to replace Pat Bates (who is termed out) which is why current Supervisors John Moorlach and Board Chairman Shawn Nelson have endorsed Robert Ming. Robert has also been endorsed by the California Republican Assembly, the Lincoln Club of Orange County, the Family Action PAC and Atlas PAC and many, many local elected officials and South County citizens. Of all of the South Orange County activists who research candidates and make voter recommendations, all of them recommend Robert Ming to be our next representative on the Board of Supervisors. My friend Robyn Nordell, who hosts her own voter recommendation web site (www.robynnordell.com) and puts up the lists of most of the other activist lists’, also recommends Robert for this position (see the Orange County section of Robyn’s site).
Running against Robert for this seat are three other candidates. One is the current Mayor of my town Dana Point. Lisa Bartlett’s votes and actions on the City of Dana Point City Council and on the Transportation Corridor Agencies have proven that she is not a true conservative or qualified for this position. While on the City Council she voted to raise taxes on guests at certain Dana Point hotels, ban plastic shopping bags and increase the size of the Dana Point city government (more employees and eliminating most outsourcing to independent contractors).
In addition, recently Ms. Bartlett was stripped of her authority as Chairman of the Transportation Corridor’s Foothill/Eastern Transportation Corridor Agency (Lisa Bartlett Stripped of Authority to Approve Contracts at TCA) largely due to her approving very questionable contracts without notice to her fellow board members. Part of her duties were to approve or disapprove of certain types of contracts and contract extensions presented to her by the Executive Director of the TCA. During the March 18, 2014 Dana Point City Council meeting I asked her which of the contracts the Executive Director of the TCA presented did she disapprove. She responded that she did not disapprove of any of the contracts presented to her. Further that the total amount involved was only $200,000.00 (Dana Point City Council: Scrutinizing TCA).
Her answers reveal two important shortcomings: First she considers $200,000 to not be an important amount of money – I find this attitude regarding ratepayer / taxpayer funds to be irresponsible. It also appears she simply rubber stamped what the executive staff placed in front of her which tells me she does not ask the proper or “hard” questions of the staff that report to her as an elected official. Given that the County’s total budget is several billions of taxpayer dollars – Ms. Bartlett’s votes and actions do not give me confidence she will be a good steward of our county taxpayer funds.
Another candidate for the 5th District Supervisor position is Mission Viejo city councilman Frank Ury. Some of Mr. Ury’s votes on his city council cause me to have concerns about his motivations and how he would handle responsibility at the county level. For example in 2008 or 2009 at the start of the Great Recession when Mission Viejo (and other Orange County) families were facing layoffs and cut backs, Frank Ury voted to approve the city spending approximately $350,000 in Mission Viejo taxpayer funds to buy a parade float in the Rose Bowl Parade. There are many cities and other public entities that have Rose Bowl floats but they are normally financed by private donations not taxpayer dollars. Some like to defend this vote by claiming there were hundreds or thousands of volunteers who came out to work on the float. Even if that is a true statement (which is questionable), then the City Council could have asked each of these “thousands” of excited and motivated volunteers to help finance this project with $25 and $100 contributions (which could be set up to be tax-deductible) and pay for the float with volunteer funds with the City simply being a conduit for that civic effort. Instead Mr. Ury voted to use taxpayer dollars to fund this unnecessary expenditure while the economy was shrinking rapidly.
Another of his questionable votes was for life time health care benefits for city council members who serve three terms on the council. This would be a significant cost to Mission Viejo taxpayers for the health care of prior city council persons long, long after they have left office. For a politician who claims to be a fiscal conservative to cast such a self-serving vote strongly suggests he was placing his own interests above those of the citizens he was elected to represent.
I am aware that in the distant past Mr. Ury worked on several projects such as proposition 226 to curb unions taking funds for political purposes. However, while I applaud Mr. Ury’s good work of about fifteen years ago, it is his recent votes that are troubling and do not show good leadership or stewardship for our County.
Neither Mr. Ury nor Ms. Bartlett came to the CRA’s endorsing convention to ask for the endorsement or explain their current and past voting records. Robert Ming was endorsed unanimously by the CRA (CRA Wrap Up).
The final candidate for this position is a Deputy District Attorney Joe Williams (he is registered No Party Preference). Mr. Williams is a complete unknown in that he has never held public office so there is no voting track record to give an indication of how he might vote on the dais of the Board of Supervisors. He is not running any type of campaign to communicate to voters like myself what he stands for and his priorities if he were to be elected. The only thing I have seen of his campaign are a few yard signs sitting on the side of busy roadways. The Board of Supervisors, with its very large budget, its budget shortfalls, thousands of employees, with serious problems such as unfunded employee pensions and retiree health care costs, is no place for someone wanting to do “on the job training.”
For these and many more reasons (but keeping in mind this blog post is already very long) I support and hope you will also support Robert Ming for the Orange County Board of Supervisors, 5th District.
In the interest of full disclosure I am the majority shareholder of a private company known as IC Media, Inc. and Robert is a minority shareholder in the company. Also, I am a practicing attorney, a former elected member of the OC Republican Central Committee, a former officer with the California Republican Assembly and a volunteer activist. I am not on the payroll of any candidate or campaign and I do not act as a paid consultant to any political campaigns.

This came over the wire from the Ceci Iglesias for Assembly campaign…

Community Leaders Endorse Ceci Iglesias for 69th Assembly District
ORANGE COUNTY, CA – Campaigning for the 69th Assembly District on the theme of “Put Community First,” Santa Ana Unified School District Board Member Ceci Iglesias today announced the endorsements of two respected community leaders, Reuben Martinez and Frank Garcia.
Martinez and Garcia join a long list of organizations and leaders endorsing Iglesias for Assembly, including the Lincoln Club of Orange County, the Hispanic 100, Los 32 por Mexico, the California Women’s Leadership Association, Atlas PAC, Assemblymen Travis Allen and Don Wagner, Senators Bob Huff and Mimi Walters, Orange County Supervisors Janet Nguyen and Todd Spitzer, Orange County Clerk-Recorder Hugh Nguyen, and Orange County Board of Education Trustee Robert Hammond.
“I am honored to be endorsed by two such respected community leaders like Reuben Martinez and Frank Garcia,” Iglesias said. “My campaign for the Assembly is about putting community first, and I am grateful for such strong community support.”
Reuben Martinez founded the iconic Librería Martinez bookstore in Santa Ana nearly 20 years ago. A delegate to several Democratic National Conventions and a 2004 winner of the MacArthur Fellowship, Martinez serves as a Presidential Fellow at Chapman University, promoting literacy and education.
Frank Garcia founded La Casa Garcia restaurant in Anaheim more than 40 years ago. Nearly 30 years ago, Garcia founded We Give Thanks, which has provided over 200,000 free Thanksgiving dinners to Orange County families in need and has award scholarships to local students for 15 years.
Iglesias was the top vote-getter in the 2012 Santa Ana Unified School Board election. Born in El Salvador, Iglesias immigrated with her family to the United States and to Central Orange County 35 years ago. A graduate of Santa Ana Unified, she earned degrees from Santa Ana College and Cal State Fullerton. Iglesias resides in Santa Ana with her son, who attends local public schools.

This Saturday, October 12, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. local residents will be gathering at the home of patriot Joyce Hicks (22541 Tindaya, Mission Viejo, CA 92692) to support Laguna Niguel Mayor Robert Ming’s campaign for 5th District Supervisor of Orange County. Our current Supervisor Pat Bates is termed out next year (Pat is running for State Senate).
Mayor Robert Ming has a solid record of Constitutional conservative governance and activism. During his time in office, Robert helped cause Laguna Niguel to build their City Hall with absolutely no debt or higher taxes. He has a solid voting record against higher taxes and fees in his city and he opposed the use of redevelopment crony capitalism long before the state ended the practice. He is a founder of the Association of California Cities – Orange County a conservative alternative to the League of Cities and he still serves on its board of directors.
Robert has been endorsed by the Lincoln Club of Orange County and Atlas PAC.
To come to this event contact Elizabeth Steinhauer at elizsteinhauer@sbcglobal.net or 949-458-0855. To learn more about Robert Ming go so http://www.robertming.com.

You may have seen my prior post entitled, “Republican? Democrat? Independent? The Partisan Affiliations of Everyone Running for Everything in Orange County.” In an effort to bring more information to voters, here is my humongous grid of endorsements, showing endorsements from the Democratic Party of Orange County, the Democratic Foundation of Orange County, the Orange County Register, the Republican Party of Orange County, the California Republican Assembly, the Lincoln Club of Orange County, Atlas PAC, and Family Action PAC.
Regrettably, I’ve been unable to find a comprehensive, countywide listing of chamber and union endorsements.
Also, some of these organizations endorsed in uncontested races. I excluded those from the grid.

The Atlas PAC, a conservative group that believes in the ideals of limited government, free market enterprise, low taxation, and individual liberty, held a forum on October 24 for its endorsed candidates. A veritable who’s who of Orange County state legislators arrived, with 5 current or prospective members of the Assembly and State Senator Mimi Walters making a brief appearance. Director Ben Pugh hosted the event, and he urged those in attendance to support the endorsed candidates, both financially and by walking or otherwise getting involved. Each candidate was given a chance to speak and, with less than two weeks before the election, the following made their pitch:
State Assembly
- Allan Mansoor – Allan said that the June primary was tough and that because of the support of Atlas PAC and others, he is likely to win in November. He highlighted the need to fight for pension reform, particularly with the passage of Proposition 32, the fight for the 3Ms in Costa Mesa (Steve Mensinger, Gary Monahan, and Colin McCarthy), the need to pass the charter in Costa Mesa (Yes on V), the pension fight in Huntington Beach, and the need for conservatives to take control of the City Council in Irvine.
- Chris Norby – Chris said that there was one seat in Orange County that could flip from Republican to Democrat – his. He noted that Republicans only hold a 1% registered voter edge in his district, and that he has been outspent 3-1 in the last few weeks, with most of the money for his challenger coming from unions. He said there were 5,000 bills proposed in the last legislative session, and 1,000 of those became laws, which he believes is far too many. He wants at least 1,000 bad laws to be repealed and he promised to fight for common sense and personal responsibility if re-elected.
- Eric Linder – Eric is running in the Inland Empire, but has many long-lasting relationships in Orange County and he said he would not be in position to win his seat if not for Atlas PAC. Eric thanked many in the room for supporting him in the tough June primary. Eric touted his experience as a business owner and said he hopes to serve with those elected officials who were present that night.
- Don Wagner – Don noted that Republicans currently have only a one seat cushion in the Assembly that is preventing the Democrats from imposing unlimited taxes on California residents. Also, one Republican member recently recanted her no taxes pledge. Despite this, he said it will get better – he expects the party to take back one seat recently lost, and that Eric Linder needs to take Jeff Miller’s old seat. He also said that there are 3-4 real possible pickups in the Assembly and that conservatives need to focus their time and resources on these seats in the next couple of weeks.
- Travis Allen- Travis is running in the 72nd District against another Republican, Troy Edgar (this is as a result of Prop. 14, passed in 2010). Travis said that he is a life-long Republican who has been an investment advisor for 16 years. He believes that his race is about no new taxes – and he signed the no new taxes pledge, but his opponent has not. He said that Edgar has raised taxes as a City Council member 12 times and he was a registered Democrat until 2006. Travis thinks we have too many bench warmers in the Sacramento with no core principles who do nothing. He believes he has the ability, desire, and educational background to make a difference. He will not raise taxes and he will make the voters proud.
Irvine City Council
- Steven Choi – Steven said this is the year that Democrat Larry Agran is going to be beat, and the Republicans will win 3 seats between his race, and the two other Republican council candidates – Christina Shea and Lynn Schott. Steven said the Atlas PAC endorsement helps him a lot, and that the voters he is meeting say that they have or will vote for him.
- Lynn Schott – Lynn previously ran unsuccessfully for City Council in 2010 and she has spent the last two years building up name recognition in the city. She emphasized kitchen table issues for the city – Irvine was ground-zero for the subprime collapse and many residents lost their jobs and homes (she noted that there are 100 homeless students in the city). She said the current council majority is tone-deaf to the residents’ struggle to pay for gas, school supplies, and groceries. She gave the example of the majority giving an across-the-board 6% raise to city employees, at a cost of $2.5 million. She is a 27-year resident of the city and Larry Agran has been in power during that entire time. Lynn wants to give Agran a retirement party on November 6.
Aliso Viejo City Council
- Mike Munzing – Mike said running has been an educational experience. His city is 7.5 square miles and he said that no one has run and won against the original council members, but he plans on being the first. Mike said he is loud, visible, and everywhere (those of us who know Mike will attest to that). Mike said he has hit the city once, but he wants to hit it again. So, on the Saturday before the election, Mike is trying to get 30 volunteers to walk every district. He also has 44,000 mail pieces going out to the residents.
Anaheim City Council
- Brian Chuchua – Brian said the city’s educational system needs help. He believes that Curt Pringle runs the city with two other council members (who he called the “Giveaway 3”). He noted that the council gave away $158 million in bed taxes, which he said is 43% of the General Fund. He also said that the city recently approved a $368 million streetcar system for 10 streetcars when buses would have cost only $58 million. He believes the system is for Disney employees. He also mentioned a $170 million train station that is to be built that is not adequate for high-speed rail (it will cost another $120 million for that). He is running because he sees what is wrong with the city and he wants to correct it. He said that he is self-funded and he needs help.
Costa Mesa City Council
- Colin McCarthy – Colin painted a picture of the rancorous campaign, and expressed outrage over the tactics of his opponents’ supporters. He described a recent video that was taken of a man picking up campaign signs supporting him, Steve Mensinger, Gary Monahan, and Measure V (charter) and ripping them up. Colin identified the man as a highly paid city employee (nearly $87,000 in annual compensation and benefits). He said he recently attended a public forum where he was booed and hissed by members of the public. A member of the Planning Commission, Colin said he sees how the “sausage is made” and how dysfunctional government is. Colin has kids and he is interested in making the city a better place for them.
Costa Mesa Sanitation District
- Jeff Mathews – Jeff believes Republicans will have big wins this year. He wants to see the power of the unions cut. He has looked at where the problems in his city are, and he found them in small districts like the sanitation district. He wants to get real changes made. Jeff mentioned that his opponents have served on the district for over 20 years, they are complacent, and he does not believe that politicians should use the same position in government as a career choice. He said the district has a $5 million surplus, due in part to higher rates, and he wants to look into all of the small-scale issues that, cumulatively, have a large impact on the city’s residents.
- Don Harper – Don said he was inspired by the 3Ms in Costa Mesa and their efforts to change the current environment. He is a businessman who founded a very successful business and he thinks he can use that experience to help change the government from the bottom up.
Lake Forest City Council
- Dwight Robinson – Dwight said the Orange County Register (which has endorsed him), published a quote from him – “If you can find it in the phone book, government shouldn’t do it.” He believes the private sector can do things much better than government can. Dwight noted that the current council members do not work in business, but he does. He runs several private businesses, his largest being an agricultural commodities exporting business, and he employs over 100 people. Dwight said that government does not create jobs, the private sector does. He noted his endorsement by the Orange County Republican Party and said that he wants to be the business owner on the City Council.
- Adam Nick – Adam said he has been an accountant and auditor for over 20 years. He owns a successful Lake Forest business and he has lived in the city for 30+ years. Adam believes his time and experience qualifies him for council service. Adam believes in small government, less regulation, and lower taxes. He said the United States Constitution sets America apart from the rest of the world in that it states that the government derives its power from the people, not the other way around; the government works for us. Adam believes he can make a difference and do good things for the city.
Mission Viejo City Council
- Ed Sachs – Ed said that he has been in business since he was 8 years old, concluding his career with 30-plus years at Pioneer Electronics where he was President of the United States Mobile Electronics division for 5 years. During his time at Pioneer, he presided over a division with a $500 million budget with $20+ million in profits. Ed said he recently challenged the city’s mayor over the city’s reserves (which have been reduced significantly over the past 5+ years) and did not receive a good answer in return. Ed also mentioned that the council has debating a dog park for the past 10 years and he wants to get in and make the tough decisions without arguing for over a decade.
- Cathy Schlicht – Larry Gilbert spoke on behalf of Cathy. He said that Cathy has opposed the city’s plans for a dog park because the first phase alone is estimated to cost $850,000. He also mentioned that Cathy opposes the Kaleidoscope property owner’s plan to put up large electronic billboards to advertise out-of-town businesses. Larry said if Ed and Cathy are not elected. the billboards will be approved.
Orange City Council
- Jon Dumitru – Jon said his race is unique because he is running against a nice person, but she is a liberal Democrat. He said that the union has spent $40,000 against him and the police union has spent $67,000. Jon helped end firefighter overtime issues that cost the city over $2 million last year. He also noted that the city just implemented a huge pension roll back, and he led the effort to eliminate compensation for City Council members. Jon also said that, even though the city recently had a $23 million deficit that it had to close with reserves, his opponent wanted to give $1 million from the city’s catastrophic reserves to give city employees a bonus to deal with a city employee’s death – in Costa Mesa.
Santa Ana City Council
- George Collins – George is running for Mayor of Santa Ana. He said that the City Manager, who also serves as the Chief of Police, makes $330,000 per year. He said that the city has no parks. George got into politics because of city corruption. He believes that the city defers things too often, which leads to debt. He also thinks that the council is a conduit for liberals to move on to higher positions like the Board of Supervisors and state Assembly. George wants to change the culture and make a difference.
