We have a developing story at the Orange County Registrar of Voters. Troy Edgar, Los Alamitos Councilmember, pulled papers earlier today for the OC Clerk-Recorder’s race. His signatures are being challenged due to extremely unusual circumstances. More to come later.

Sidhu Opens Committee for 68th Assembly District
Posted by Chris Nguyen on July 15, 2013

Harry Sidhu
Lending credibility to rumors swirling in the Spring, former Anaheim Councilman Harry Sidhu opened a new campaign committee this month: “Harry Sidhu for Assembly 2014.”
Sidhu filed a Form 501 (Candidate Intention Statement) for the 68th Assembly District when opening that committee. On the Form 501, Sidhu also indicated he would not accept the voluntary expenditure limit of $544,000 in the primary and $953,000 in the general election.
The only catch with a 2014 bid for AD-68 is a gentleman by the name of Don Wagner.
There are four possibilities for this committee:
- Sidhu is crazy enough to challenge Wagner, who would cream Sidhu in the June 2014 primary
- Sidhu is banking on Wagner running for CD-45 in 2014 (win or lose, Wagner would have to give up his Assembly seat if he chose to run for CD-45 since the elections for the two seats occur concurrently)
- Sidhu is using the Assembly committee as a placeholder to raise funds for another office (Sidhu would then presumably launch a surprise by filing for another office at the last minute and then slide the money over)
- Sidhu is using the 2014 committee as a placeholder for a future vacancy in the AD-68 seat in 2015 (Wagner leaves the seat early) or 2016 (Wagner terms out)
Sidhu has a 2-3 record in the five times he’s sought elected office.
- In 2010, Sidhu ran unsuccessfully for 4th District Supervisor, losing to Supervisor Shawn Nelson 63.1%-36.9%. Just 0.1% of AD-68 voters live in the 4th Supervisorial District.
- In the 2008 general election, Sidhu was the top vote-getter for Anaheim City Council, winning 23.2% of the vote. 16.8% of AD-68 voters live in the City of Anaheim, which is the third-largest city in AD-68.
- In the 2008 primary election, Sidhu ran unsuccessfully for the 33rd Senate District, losing to then-Assemblywoman Mimi Walters in a 74.0%-26.0% landslide. (For comparison, Supervisor Janet Nguyen defeated Steve Rocco 74.2%-25.8% in 2012.)
- In 2004, Sidhu was first elected to the Anaheim City Council, winning 18.4% of the vote, coming in second behind Lorri Galloway.
- In 2002, Sidhu made an unsuccessful bid for Anaheim City Council, winning 10.7% of the vote, coming in fourth behind Bob Hernandez, Richard Chavez, and Bob Zemel.

Dominus Way Off On AD 65
Posted by Mr. Friendly on January 22, 2013
The newest blogger on this site had a post go up early this morning that gave an analysis of the 65th Assembly District that had everything but reality included in it. As someone that lives in the 65th Assembly District I can think of at least 3 candidates that would finish ahead of Young Kim and Henry Charoen. 2 of these candidates are already rumored to be running.
- Steve Hwangbo- La Palma Councilman
- Bruce Whitaker- Fullerton Councilman
- Lucille Kring- Anaheim Councilwoman
Miller Oh likely would have been the favorite to be the nominee in 2014 had he not been charged with lying to avoid paying child support. This story makes it unlikely that he will even consider entering into the race to even test the waters.
Chris Norby was also rumored to be running to take back his old seat but my reaction to hearing this was that it would be a disaster. Norby was a train wreck that carried enough baggage to cost him a Republican seat. Republicans need to find candidates that do not carry a lot of personal baggage if they want to gain back any revevancy in California.
Young Kim comes across as a political opportunist by moving to Fullerton seemingly for the sole purpose of running for AD 65. I remember a couple of other people from the ritzy part of Anaheim making a move to run for an office similar to AD 65 in 2010. Ask Harry Sidhu and Lorri Galloway how that move worked out for them.
Henry Charoen and Steve Hwangbo both have a tough battle coming from the smallest portion of AD 65 (La Palma), and they will both need to spend somewhere near $250,000 (at least) to advance into the November election agains Shron Quirk-Silva.
This leads me to believe that contrary to what Dominus might think Young Kim is far from being the front-runner.
On a side note what the heck is Long Pham thinking running for SD 34? I hope that he realizes that this will end no better than his bid for AD 68 (Mansoor), AD 72 (Allen), and all of the other races that he has thrown his name on the ballot for. Even Steve Rocco must think he is nuts for running in this race.

Team Ausmus Snubs OUSD Voters, Attempts to Censor Opponent, Abuses School Resources
Posted by Chris Nguyen on October 16, 2012
As a graduate and resident of the Orange Unified School District, I am certainly familiar with OUSD having had some of Orange County’s most raucous elections in years past, and while things have died down (thanks, Capistrano Unified!), this year has proven to be one of the quieter OUSD campaigns anybody can remember.

Robert “Bob” Ausmus
However, in this weird quietness has been an oddly arrogant campaign being run by one of the challengers, Robert “Bob” Ausmus, who is seeking to unseat OUSD Board Member Dr. Alexia L. Deligianni in Trustee Area 3.
Bob Ausmus didn’t even bother to write a candidate’s statement in the sample ballot mailed out to all registered voters in the school district by the Orange County Registrar of Voters (check out page 14 of the PDF sample ballot to see where the OUSD candidate’s statements are), leaving voters with absolutely no information about him. By the way, here’s a picture of the last guy to be elected to the OUSD board without a candidate’s statement:

Steve Rocco, OUSD Board Member, 2004-2008, Convicted Ketchup Thief
How are voters supposed to decide who to vote for when they have no information about a candidate? Are they supposed to vote on signs?
Speaking of signs, Robert Ausmus supporters have acted ridiculously. Some volunteers for Dr. Alexia Deligianni posted her re-election signs in Anaheim Hills. Within hours, the signs were gone. Ordinarily, lost signs are just part of the normal business of campaigns. City crews, the weather, cheap garage sales hosts, etc. often take the signs. However, the timing and systematic nature of the sign removals made it clear that people supporting Ausmus were targeting Deligianni’s signs. First, the signs were posted on a Friday evening and removed within hours in the dead of night. Secondly, nearly every Deligianni sign in Anaheim Hills was removed, but every single instance where a Deligianni sign was next to an Ausmus sign, the Ausmus sign was left untouched. A witness driving by noted seeing a Deligianni sign being taken by a white male who resembled a “boxer” from behind. Also, one of the rare Deligianni signs that survived in Anaheim Hills…well, I think this trio of pictures makes it clear what happened to the survivor signs:
Then, volunteers put out more signs on Sunday night. The signs were still up as of 7 PM on Monday but most of them disappeared during the dead of night. It wasn’t city crews because those guys aren’t out working that late. Plus, you guessed it, the Ausmus signs were left untouched.
If one candidate’s side removed signs attacking their candidate, I’d understand if these were “Stop Ausmus” signs that were being removed because attack signs are a different animal. However, removing an opponent’s signs that simply promote her candidacy is just plain anti-democratic and insulting to the voters.
In further sign abuse, this sign was placed on the campus of Canyon High School, violating the age-old regulation of campaign signs not being placed on school property:
In an abuse of school resources, this email went out from Team Ausmus from a school district email account over an official Orange Unified School District e-mail list sent to the families of the Canyon High School Class of 2015 (today’s sophomores).
From: “Ausmus, Leslie” <REDACTED@orangeusd.org>

Reply-To: “chsclassof2015” <REDACTED@listserv.orangeusd.k12.ca.us>[EDITOR’S NOTE: Lengthy email message edited for brevity. Scroll to bottom of this post for full e-mail.]…
For the purpose of clarification, and because many of you (and your students) have asked, yes, the candidate running for our school board named “Bob Ausmus” is related to me. He’s my husband. :)
As always, if you have questions or concerns, let me know. The best contact is via email at: REDACTED@orangeusd.org . I hope you all have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Leslie Ausmus
Sophomore Counselor, Class of 2015
If it weren’t for the never-ending series of abuses from Team Ausmus, it might have been plausible that this was an innocent mistake, but taken in the totality of circumstances, it is clear that this was a flimsy excuse to announce the candidacy of Bob Ausmus to the entire list of families of Canyon High sophomores. (Indeed, we didn’t know about this email until an angry parent passed it on.) If some people ask you a political question, you don’t send a mass email to hundreds of people on a school district email list, you respond to them individually.
My father, who immigrated to the United States after fleeing from Communist Vietnam, expressed his outrage at the actions of the Ausmus side, noting that democracy is harmed when people try to suppress free speech, hide information from the voters, and abuse public resources. He said, “I’m disgusted that he has to steal signs instead of letting everyone get their name out there. That’s just wrong. And then to use a school email list? Unbelievable!”
Unbelievable is right, Dad. The arrogance of the Ausmus campaign of not providing information to voters, stealing/covering opponent signs, and then abusing school resources is utterly repugnant.
Here is the entire Ausmus email to the Class of 2015 parent mailing list: Read the rest of this entry »

Deb Pauly Only Garnered 5.5% of Vote?
Posted by HBK on June 11, 2012
I have been allowed to make one last post regarding the 3rd Supervisorial District race with the understanding that The Rock of OC would also get to make one last post and so I planned a sort of tongue in cheek post about Deb Pauly, Steve Rocco and the Orange County Tin Foil Hat Society.
As someone who witnessed Steve Rocco win in an unbelievable shock back in 2004 I did not expect him to garner more than 10% of the vote in his race for Supervisor. Shockingly he managed to get 26% of the vote. This leads me to conclude that 26% of the vote can be labeled the crazy vote.
With Deb Pauly garnering 31% of the vote in her race we can only conclude that she garnered the 26% of the crazy vote and picked 5% of people who actually made a rational decision to vote for her.
I made an agreement with Nguyen and Emami that I would no longer post about this particular race after this who have the same agreement with The Rock of OC. Therefore, I feel it important to ask readers to let me know what other issues in the North Orange County area that they would like me to post about.

Mayoral Candidate Brags About Endorsement from Serial Killer on Death Row
Posted by Chris Nguyen on May 14, 2012

Sacramento Mayoral Candidate Leonard Padilla,
Proudly Endorsed by Death Row’s Speed Freak Killer, Wesley Shermantine
A strange tale from over the weekend…
Sacramento Mayoral Candidate Leonard Padilla, who is one of three candidates challenging Mayor Kevin Johnson‘s re-election bid, is proudly announcing his endorsement by Wesley Shermantine, who is half of the serial killer duo known as the Speed Freak Killers and currently sits on death row.
Padilla told Sacramento’s Fox40: “When you have a guy on death row endorsing you, you have to be somewhat proud of that.”
Why does he think that? Well, he stated, “If I go out here to the unions, or if I go to the firemen, and ask for their endorsement, they’re going to want something in return. I mean, this man, he cannot ask for anything in return.”
Well, I guess technically, he’s right that he won’t be beholden to any special interests.
On the potential drawback of the serial killer endorsement, he said, “I don’t think it’ll have any backlash because there’s nothing about the man that’s a secret.”
That’s ridiculous. The backlash is because of what’s known about him.
Padilla even told Fox 40 he was considering making a commercial about Serial Killer Shermantine’s endorsement.
I’m going to name the Padilla for Mayor 2012 campaign the winner of my “Dumbest Campaign Strategy Ever” award.
This is clearly a publicity stunt, but the “Any press is good press” expression has its limits. He will definitely lose many of what few votes he had, and I’m not sure if this will attract any new business for his bail bondsman or bounty hunter operations. I would think a bounty hunter wouldn’t want publicity. I would also think even those seeking the services of a bail bondsman would hesitate at using someone backed by a serial killer.
(Readers, feel free to insert a bad Sacramento joke here.)
Padilla came in 58th out of 135 candidates for Governor in the 2003 recall. Padilla came in 4th out of 4 in the 2004 Sacramento mayoral primary and came in 3rd out of 5 in the 2008 Sacramento mayoral primary (behind only Johnson and then-Mayor Heather Fargo).
I’m still waiting for the Association of Ketchup Thieves to Endorse Steve Rocco for Supervisor and the appropriate independent expenditure on behalf of Janet Nguyen by Heinz, Hunt’s, and other ketchup manufacturers.

Useless, Meaningless, Ridiculous Campaigns In June
Posted by Former Blogger Chris Emami on April 16, 2012
One of the major flaws that I have found in Prop 14 is the way t moves candidates from June to November. As an example, if Troy Edgar was running for Supervisor with the same field that he had in the Assembly race, and received over 50% of the vote he would win and no November election would take place.
However, if that same race was to take place for a seat in the California State Assembly the race under the new Prop 14 rules even if a candidate received only 1 vote they would still advance to November in a head to head race. This therefore creates a number of races that essentially are glorified polls in June.
Races that would fall under this category include:
SD 29- A race between State Senator and Workers Rights Attorney Greg Diamond. I am hoping that Huff wins this race based on his policy decisions (Even though he is a bit of a squish on certain issues.). Greg Diamond is an Orange Juice blogger, a very smart man (he will let you know it, too) with an education that would rival my fellow blogger Chris Nguyen, and his best quality is that he reads this blog.
SD 37- This race is between sitting Senator Mimi Walters and perennial candidate Steve Young. Walter s is running for reelection after having defeated Harry Sidhu in her first race for Senate. Steve Young appears willing to run for any seat as I believe this is the 3rd campaign I have seen him run.
AD 55- Curt Hagman against Greg Fritchle. This race is a true yawner as it involves a district that covers Orange, Los Angeles, and San Bernardino. Hagman is a former Chino Hills City Councilman that defeated Larry Dick for this seat back in 2008. He is now running for his last term in the Assembly. (Did I mention that I am happy to have Don Wagner as my Assemblyman).
AD 65- Chris Norby is running against Sharon Quirk-Silva for this seat. This race actually does matter in June, despite the fact that both candidates will advance to November. If Quirk-Silva does well in June, we could see some more Democratic resources be poured into this race. It is important for Norby to crush her in June.
AD 68- Assemblyman Don Wagner is running against perennial candidate Christina Avalos. The new AD 68 is pretty awesome and a huge step up for Anaheim Hills from the old AD 60. Wagner is in probably the safest seat for any Republican Assembly member in California, although I may be wrong on this particular statistic.
AD 73- This one will be interesting to watch in terms of the mail that gets sent out with Assemblywoman Diane Harkey facing off against infamous Capistrano Unified School District teacher James Corbett. The question comes down to whether or not mail gets sent out in June, or if it is held off until the November election.
1st Supervisorial District- Some of you may think that you have caught me slipping up, as this race will be decided in June. However read the title and you will understand. This race will be a good one to chuckle over. Rocco is best known for his conspiracy that he is part of a murder plot concocted by Albertsons, Smokecraft Sausage, and Kodak.
I would say to sit back and enjoy watching the races to see who wins, but in this case nobody actually wins. This is with the obvious exception of the 1st Supervisorial District.

Steve Rocco To Benefit From Independent Expenditures
Posted by Former Blogger Chris Emami on April 1, 2012
In a shocking turn of events, candidate for Orange County Supervisor Steve Rocco is expected to benefit from numerous independent expenditures. The independent expenditures are expected to come from the Heinz Ketchup Company. Candidates in the 3rd District race Todd Spitzer and Deborah Pauly are both disappointed that Heinz will not be picking a side in this race.
The main reason for Rocco getting the support is his willingness to spell the product name as ketchup and not catsup.
However, concerned about Rocco being controlled by the special interest group, Kraft foods has apparently dumped money into an I.E. account to help support Janet Nguyen.
Disclaimer: This is an April Fools Day post.

OC CRA Endorsing Convention Recap
Posted by Chris Nguyen on March 24, 2012
For those of you who don’t want to wade through my live play-by-play of the OC CRA endorsing convention, here’s a list of all the endorsements from this morning.
(By the way, the play-by-plays with the most fireworks were in the Spitzer-Pauly race for the 3rd Supervisorial District and the Edgar-Pham battle for the endorsement in the 72nd Assembly District.)
Congressional Endorsements:
- CD-38: LA County CRAs will sponsor that endorsing convention
- CD-39: Congressman Ed Royce by voice vote
- CD-45: No endorsement (effectively, a 50/50 split occurred, as Congressman John Campbell blocked businessman John Webb’s endorsement without being present)
- CD-46: Businessman Jerry Hayden won 11 of the 12 votes cast in the first round.
- CD-47: No endorsement actually got more votes than any candidate.
- CD-48: Congressman Dana Rohrabacher by voice vote
- CD-49: Congressman Darrell Issa by voice vote
- SD-29: Senate Republican Leader Bob Huff endorsed by voice vote
- SD-37: Senator Mimi Walters endorsed by voice vote
State Assembly Endorsements
- AD-55: Assemblyman Curt Hagman endorsed by voice vote
- AD-65: Assemblyman Chris Norby endorsed by voice vote
- AD-68: Assemblyman Don Wagner endorsed by voice vote
- Ad-69: No endorsement
- AD-72: Los Alamitos Mayor Troy Edgar captured the endorsement in the second round over Orange County Board of Education Member Long Pham, who actually led in the first round of balloting
- AD-73: Assemblywoman Diane Harkey endorsed by voice vote
- AD-74: Allan Mansoor endorsed by voice vote
Supervisorial Endorsements
- 1st Supervisorial District: Supervisor Janet Nguyen endorsed by voice vote (of course, her sole opponent is convicted ketchup thief Steve Rocco, who is registered as no party preference)
- 3rd Supervisorial District: Todd Spitzer endorsed in second round over Deborah Pauly after a fairly spirited discussion
Orange County Board of Education Endorsements
- Area 1: Robert Hammond endorsed by voice vote
- Area 3: OCBE Trustee Ken Williams endorsed by voice vote
(In the interest of full disclosure, my day job is working for Assemblyman Chris Norby. Also, OCBE candidate Robert Hammond and OCBE Trustee Ken Williams are clients of Custom Campaigns. Norby, Hammond, and Williams were all endorsed by voice vote.)
