Assemblyman Curt Hagman’s Memorial Day Message

Memorial Day

May 28 marks Memorial Day, which honors the brave men and women who died defending our freedom while serving in our nation’s military.

Memorial Day is much more than just an excuse to enjoy an extended weekend.  It is a sacred day, where every American should take time to reflect on the more than 1 million American service members who have given their lives to keep our nation free.

From the Revolutionary War to the current conflict in Afghanistan, American service members have had to endure numerous and sometimes dreadful challenges to carry out their mission.  Given the reality of war, some never came home to see their families. We set aside this important day each year to pay tribute to their memory.

Some of the things that we can do to honor their sacrifice on Memorial Day include:

  • Flying the American flag at half-staff until noon
  • Observing a moment of silent prayer during the National Moment of Remembrance at 3 p.m.
  • Visiting a veterans’ cemetery and placing flowers or American flags on the gravesites of our troops

Perhaps the most important thing we can do is to vow to never forget the sacrifices of our fallen service members.  Given that today’s celebrity-obsessed culture emphasizes vanity and the trivial, it is more important than ever to teach our young people about the remarkable legacy of service, perseverance, and sacrifice that the fallen have left behind.  Passing these values on will help ensure the enduring greatness of America. Democrat Quirk-Silva Gets $200 from RINO Pat McKinley

In News that should come as no surprise to anyone RINO Pat McKinley appeared on the campaign finance report of Democrat Sharon Quirk-Silva as a $200 donor. This tells me that McKinley recognizes that he is out the door after the June election.

It should be noted that Kelly’s Army has begun turning on Quirk-Silva because apparently they feel that she used them to attain the Mayorship to give herself a boost for her Assembly campaign.

The $200 check from McKinley was given to the Quirk-Silva campaign on April 6th.

McKinley was police chief for 16 years from 1993-2009 and appears to have been behind the hiring of all of the officers involved in the Kelly Thomas case. Even though he is a Republican, I would argue that he is more liberal than Quirk-Silva in his voting pattern. Bruce Whitaker is truly the gold standard for conservatism in Fullerton. some might even argue that McKinley is the one who created the culture that existed up until recently within the Fullerton Police Department.

Interestingly McKinley is the one who nominated Quirk-Silva to be Mayor. She was selected Mayor unanimously on a 5-0 voice vote (one of the few mistakes that Bruce Whitaker has made in my opinion). Whitaker might have been hoodwinked on this one though, because in fairness Quirk-Silva did nominate Whitaker to be Mayor Pro Tem though the motion was defeated 3-2.

Quirk- Silva is in a tight race for the Assembly against well known Republican Chris Norby. A contribution from McKinley is not a great thing to have turn up in her reports. (In the effort of full disclosure, Custom Campaigns has been hired to do some website work for the Norby campaign).

AD-72 Spending: Edgar $232,000, Pham $106,000, Allen $62,000, Dovinh $16,000

Mayor Troy Edgar (R-Los Alamitos), OC Board of Education Member Long Pham (R-Fountain Valley), Businessman Travis Allen (R-Huntington Beach), and Planning Commissioner Joe Dovinh (D-Garden Grove)

In the 72nd Assembly District race, Republican Los Alamitos Mayor Troy Edgar spent $212,250 during the March 18-May 19 reporting period.  This brings his total spending in the AD-72 race to $231,974.  Surprisingly, this leaves only $10,791 in his warchest.  However, the independently wealthy Edgar can easily write a check to his own campaign (indeed, he put $400,000 into his Congressional warchest before deciding to run for the Assembly instead).

Republican Orange County Board of Education Member Long Pham spent $62,675 during the March 18-May 19 reporting period, bringing his total spending in the AD-72 race to $106,072.  He has only $1,412 left in his warchest.

Republican Huntington Beach Businessman Travis Allen spent $54,233 during the March 18-May 19 reporting period, bringing his total spending in the AD-72 race to $62,406.  He has $23,389 left in his warchest.

Democratic Garden Grove Planning Commissioner Joe Dovinh spent $6,699 during the March 18-May 19 reporting period, brining his total spending in the AD-72 race to $16,352.  He has $5,493 left in his warchest.

Democratic Candidate Albert Ayala did not meet the $1,000 threshold to file a campaign finance report.

There are no reported independent expenditures in this race.

Edgar spent the bulk of his money on reaching actual voters. He spent $119,433 on campaign mail and literature.  He spent another $30,595 on slate mailers.  That’s $150,028 of his $231,974 (65%) of his spending going to voter communication.

Pham just had a lot of overhead expenses.  He spent $25,115 on slate mailers, $3,500 on TV ads, and $1,548 on palm cards.  The rest of his spending went into campaign consulting fees, miscellaneous personnel costs, a $1,748 photography expenditure, and other overhead.  That’s $30,163 of his $106,072 (28%) of his spending going to voter communication.

Allen suffered much of the same spending problems that Pham did.  He spent $15,860 on campaign mail and literature and $5,000 in print ads.  The rest of his spending went into campaign consulting fees, miscellaneous personnel costs, a $12,650 poll, a $900 photography expenditure, and other overhead.  That’s $20,860 of his $62,406 (33%) of his spending going to voter communication.

Dovinh spent $4,063 on the COPS Voter Guide slate mailer, $1,315 on print ads, and $765 on campaign literature.  The rest of his spending went into various personnel expenses and the occasional other overhead.  That’s $6,143 of his $16,352 (38%) of his spending going to voter communication.

It’s interesting how close Edgar and Pham’s personnel/overhead costs are, but Edgar has spent five times as much on actually reaching voters.

It is clear that Edgar is dominating the voter communication in AD-72, with nearly three times as much as his opponents combined.  Edgar will come in first by a comfortable margin.  It’s probably already too late for any of the other candidates to catch him.  While Dovinh spent the least of the four, he still remains the higher spending Democrat.  With the Republican vote split three ways and the Democratic vote split only two ways, the top two candidates in June will be Edgar and Dovinh, who will advance to the November general election.

Bay Area’s Munger Spending on Behalf of Daigle in OC’s AD-74 Rises to Over $470,000

We reported previously here and here about the vast sums of money that Santa Clara County Republican Party Chairman Charles Munger, Jr.’s Spirit of Democracy California PAC has spent on behalf of Newport Beach City Councilwoman Leslie Daigle, who is running against Assemblyman Allan Mansoor and businessman Bob Rush for the 74th Assembly District.  (Daigle and Mansoor are both registered Republicans, though it is widely known that Mansoor is the candidate of the conservatives, libertarians, Tea Party, etc. while Daigle is the candidate of the moderate and liberal-leaning factions.  Rush became a registered Democrat in February.)

The Spirit of Democracy California PAC formed by Munger, the son and namesake of Warren Buffett’s business partner, has now spent nearly half a million dollars on Daigle’s behalf in the last two weeks.  Specifically, it’s $470,671, which is broken down this way:

  • May 21: $145,000 for TV Commercials
  • May 21: $21,306 for Mailers
  • May 21: $20,190 for Mailers
  • May 21: $15,619 for Slate Mailers
  • May 15: $20,973 for Mailers
  • May 14: $180,000 for TV Commercials
  • May 14: $20,973 for Mailers
  • May 14: $7,500 for Consulting
  • May 14: $7,500 for Consulting
  • May 14: $25,111 for Mailers
  • May 14: $6,499 for Mailers

(Note that the $150,000 previously reported by Munger’s PAC was amended to $180,000 in a subsequent campaign finance report.)

This totals:

  • $325,000 for TV Commericals
  • $115,052 for Mailers
  • $15,619 for Slate Mailers
  • $15,000 for Consulting

The only other beneficiary of the largesse of the Spirit of Democracy California PAC is Assemblywoman Beth Gaines (R-Roseville), who has received $175,334 in independent expenditures from the PAC.

Munger has contributed $726,826 to the PAC.  Besides Munger, the only other contributor to the PAC is the California Dental Association, which has dropped $150,000.  That’s a total of $876,826 in the PAC.  They’ve spent a combined $646,005 for Daigle and Gaines, leaving $230,821 available for future spending.  Of course, Munger also has the deep pockets to drop far more into the PAC at a day’s notice.  After all, he and his sister, Molly Munger, have spent millions of dollars on California ballot measures.

Central Committee Meeting Literature Travis Allen In The Mail

Chris Nguyen did an excellent job covering the Central Committee meeting from last night from his BlackBerry (Yes, I have told him to grow up and get an iPhone). He will likely be taking the day off today from blogging to rest his thumbs. I will try to pick up the slack a bit and write about a lesser noticed item from last nights meeting.

This blog has been a bit rough on Travis Allen over the past few weeks but he will be happy to know that he is going to be getting some positive press here. It appears that he has sent out a mail piece to AD 72 voters and left a copy of the pieces on chairs at the meeting last night.

Munger Drops Another $366,604 into Pro-Daigle PAC Bringing Total Contributions to $876,826

Two days ago, I wrote about the $360,222 that Santa Clara County Republican Party Chairman Charles Munger, Jr. dumped into the Spirit of Democracy California, a committee that spent $217,583 on behalf of Newport Beach City Councilwoman Leslie Daigle and $83,171 on behalf of Assemblywoman Beth Gaines.  Daigle is challenging Assemblyman Allan Mansoor while Gaines is being challenged by attorney Andy Pugno.  (Daigle, Gaines, Mansoor, and Pugno are all registered Republicans.)

The California Dental Association had also dropped $150,000 into the committee.  The committee has now received $876,826 from Munger’s two contributions and the Dental Association’s single contribution.

The PAC has since spent $20,973 for a pro-Daigle mailer, on top of the $217,583 it previously spent for her, bringing its total pro-Daigle spending to $238,556.

The PAC has since spent $17,992 for a pro-Gaines mailer and $15,000 for pro-Gaines TV ads, on top of the $83,171 it previously spent for her, bringing its total pro-Gaines spending to $116,163.

The Spirit of Democracy California PAC still has more than half a million dollars cash on hand ($522,107, to be exact).  Munger has also demonstrated he can still dump in hundreds of thousands of dollars at a moment’s notice.

Dentists & Bay Area’s Munger Spend $218,000 in 4 Days to Support Leslie Daigle

Newport Beach Councilwoman Leslie Daigle, Santa Clara County Republican Party Chairman Charles Munger, Jr., and Assemblywoman Beth Gaines

Santa Clara County Republican Party Chairman Charles Munger, Jr., who funded Proposition 11 of 2008 and Proposition 20 of 2010 (Prop 11 formed the redistricting commission while Prop 20 extended the commission’s jurisdiction to Congressional districts), and the California Dental Association together spent $218,000 between May 10-14 to support Republican Newport Beach Councilwoman Leslie Daigle in her bid to unseat incumbent Republican Assemblyman Allan Mansoor.

  • On April 13, Munger dropped $360,222 into the “Spirit of Democracy California” PAC.
  • On Thursday (May 10), the California Dental Association IE PAC dropped another $150,000 into the PAC.  That same day, the SDC spent $39,110 in for Daigle.
  • On Monday (May 14), SDC spent $83,171 to support Sacramento-area incumbent Republican Assemblywoman Beth Gaines in her bid to defend her seat against Republican Attorney Andy Pugno.  That same day, SDC also spent $178,473 to support Daigle.

That leaves $209,469 left in the SDC PAC.

Here’s a breakdown of the Spirit of Democracy California IEs for Daigle thus far: one $150,000 payment for TV ads, three mailer payments totaling $52,583, and two consultant payments, each $7,500.  For Gaines, there’s one $54,000 payment for radio ads, one $14,171 payment for a mailer, and two consultant payments each $7,500.

For those of you reading carefully, you may have noticed the $150,000 figure for TV ads for Daigle is exactly the dollar amount that the California Dental Association dropped into the Spirit of Democracy California.

Munger’s spending a lot of money this month.  Just last week, he spent $750,000 to fund the California Reform Institute, run by Senator Sam Blakeslee.

With $209,469 left in the Spirit of Democracy California PAC (and Munger’s very deep pockets), this could be a long three weeks for Mansoor and Pugno.
