The Republican Party of Orange County Central Committee met on Monday night to consider endorsements for local offices and ballot measures.
OC Political live-blogged the meeting, but with the back and forth motions to modify the list, many readers were confused by what the endorsements were, so by popular demand here are the list of early endorsements (most non-early endorsements will be considered on September 1):

Assembly Republicans and Local Leaders Call on Democrats to Fast-Track GOP Plan to Fix California’s Roads
Four Months Later, GOP Plan to #FixOurRoads Still Only Practical Plan
FULLERTON, CA – Members of the Assembly Republican Caucus and local community leaders will hold a press conference on Thursday to urge Democratic leaders to fast-track the Assembly Republican transportation plan. Four months after gaveling in a special session on transportation, the Assembly Republican plan to #FixOurRoads is still the only practical, comprehensive plan on the table that does not raise taxes.
Unveiled in June, the 9-point plan would generate $6.6 billion in annual funding for roads and highways without new taxes. In addition, roughly half of the funds generated for transportation by the Assembly Republican plan goes back to local government to help fund local infrastructure improvements.

There’s not much else to say beyond the headline, as Chris Norby was arrested tonight for domestic violence and child endangerment. Norby served in the State Assembly from 2010-2012, on the Board of Supervisors from 2003-2010, and on the Fullerton City Council from 1984-2002.
Here’s an excerpt from the Orange County Register’s story on the arrest:
FULLERTON – Former state Assemblyman Chris Norby, 64, was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of domestic violence and child endangerment, Fullerton police confirmed.
Norby, a former Fullerton councilman, mayor and county supervisor, was booked into the Fullerton city jail, Fullerton police Sgt. Jeff Stuart said.
Police late Wednesday night were not able to provide any additional details regarding the allegations that led to Norby’s arrest. He was released on a $10,000 bond, Stuart said.
I’m sure we’ll be hearing more about this story in the coming days and weeks as more information comes out.
3/13 Update: The Orange County Register added a new paragraph to their story this morning:
In a phone interview late Wednesday, Norby said his arrest was the result of “false accusations” made by his wife. He declined to go into specifics, but described himself as a victim.

Fullerton Mayor Doug Chaffee responds to the acquittal verdict for the Fullerton officers tried in the death of Kelly Thomas:
Today, the jury has spoken and we respect the verdict. I understand and appreciate how difficult this has been for the Thomas family. We appreciate not everyone may agree with the jury’s verdict. But we trust that the community will respect the verdict and the juror’s decisions.
Over the course of the past two and a half years the City of Fullerton has taken the initiative to implement reforms to our police department so it can provide the best possible service to our community. As Fullerton’s new Mayor, I will continue to make certain those efforts continue.
Mayor Chaffee was elected in June of 2012 along with Greg Sebourn and Travis Kieger during the recall election that swept out trio Councilmembers Richard Jones, Pat McKinley and Don Bankhead out of office due to the Kelly Thomas beating and other issues that snarled the Fullerton Police Department.
Note: Travis Kieger was unsuccessful in retaining his seat in November of 2012, which he was replaced by Jan Flory.

I was working on a database of the part affiliation of all Orange County local elected officials. Finally, I have completed the project with all of the special districts and county seats being added. I also fixed some errors in the previous versions (here, here, and here) and have combined the database into one post.
We have added a button on the menu bar for our readers to always be able to access this database and use it for whatever research/political needs that they may have. Due to the length of th epost you are going to have to click the below link to read the rest of the post.

In what comes as quite a shock I learned yesterday that the Friends For Fullerton’s Future Blog is calling it quits after 5 years of blogging. Although I didn’t always agree with the methods they used to get their point across nobody can deny the lasting footprint that they leave behind in Fullerton.
In a final post yesterday it was announced by Tony Bushala that they would be wrapping things up for now, but leaving the blog up as a testament to what they have accomplished over the years. This announcement comes less than a year after Red County announced that they would be closing their doors. The number of right leaning blogs in Orange County has shrunk quite a bit since 2006 which is surprising considering the demographics in Orange County.
Fullerton’s Future will forever be best known for the way that they covered the horrific death of Kelly Thomas and the investigative reporting they did into the culture of the Fullerton PD. Whether you agree with the position that they took on it or not, they wrote some thought-provoking stuff on their site.
Tony Bushala sites some impressive stats in his farewell post on the numbers that his blog was able to put up.

| Ending homelessness in Orange County |
|
| (Santa Ana, CA) On January 15, members of the Orange County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to purchase property for the purposes of creating a year-round shelter for the homeless in North County. The location of the property is at 301 S. State College Blvd., in Fullerton and adjacent to north Anaheim. This item is part of the county’s board-approved ten-year plan to end homelessness and takes steps to create a year-round homeless shelter.
Supervisor Shawn Nelson led the project, which is based in the Fourth District. For more than a year, Supervisor Nelson and staff worked with Fullerton officials and community members to identify a site location and work through logistical concerns. Supervisor Spitzer praised Supervisor Nelson’s leadership in bringing this important issue forward.
“This is such an important step forward for Orange County as we find ways to help our homeless get back on their feet, and find treatment solutions for those affected by mental illness or drug and alcohol addiction,” said Supervisor Todd Spitzer in support of the purchase.
“But it’s also critical to be aware that our action today is just a first step and that the people of Fullerton still have opportunities for public input at the city level through public hearings on this project,” Spitzer also said.
Currently, two part time shelters are available under the county’s seasonal Armory Emergency Shelter Program. Access to these shelters is limited to the winter season and to specific nighttime hours.
Spitzer also highlighted the upcoming survey of the county’s homeless population and committed that he and his staff would participate in the event. |

There are seven races in Orange County where less than 0.5% separates two candidates for the last spot in office. Countywide, there are 73,719 ballots remaining to be counted (9,371 absentee ballots, 64,217 provisional ballots, and 131 Election Day paper ballots). In all seven of these races, fewer than 500 votes separate the last winner and the first runner-up. These range from the 442-vote margin for the Santa Ana Unified School Board to the 4-vote margin (yes, just four votes) for Fullerton City Council.
In the Santa Ana Unified School Board race, incumbent Jose Alfredo Hernandez (D) is hanging on to a 442-vote (0.5%) lead over challenger Valerie Amezcua (D). In an unusual situation for Santa Ana, two Democrats are fighting for the third place spot and the board’s last seat while Republicans occupy the top two slots, with challenger Ceci Iglesias ahead of incumbent Rob Richardson.

In the Mission Viejo City Council race, Councilwoman Cathy Schlicht (R) is clinging on to a 270-vote (0.4%) lead over challenger Wendy Bucknum (R). Bucknum ran on a slate with Councilman Frank Ury (R) while Schlict ran on a slate with Ed Sachs (R). If Schlicht hangs on, the voters will have split the baby by picking the incumbent from each slate leaving the status quo in place with a Council majority of Trish Kelley (R), Dave Leckness (R), and Ury versus a Council minority of Rhonda Reardon (R) and Schlicht. If Bucknum overtakes Schlicht, then the Council majority will grow to 4 members.

In the Westminster City Council race, challenger Diana Carey (D) has seen her lead over incumbent Councilman Tyler Diep (R) dwindle to 200 votes (0.4%). In 2008, Diep was behind Penny Loomer (D) by 1,500 votes on Election Night and ended up winning the election by edging out Loomer by 49 votes. On Election Night 2012, Diep was behind Carey by 709 votes. Can Diep pull off the late surge again?

If Stephens overtakes Monahan, the conservative Council majority will become the minority.

If Hernandez hangs on, the majority of Tom Lindsey (R), Craig Young (R), and Hernandez would push YLRRR into the minority, with Schwing and Anderson.

In the Fullerton City Council race, former Councilwoman Jan Flory (D) has a 4-vote lead over incumbent Councilman Travis Kiger (R). If Flory wins, the Fullerton City Council will have two liberal Democrats (Doug Chaffee and Flory), two libertarian-leaning conservative Republicans (Bruce Whitaker and Greg Sebourn), and one more traditional conservative Republican (Jennifer Fitzgerald). If Kiger can overtake Flory’s 4-vote lead, he would cement the results of the June recall and maintain Orange County’s most libertarian council.

Chris Nguyen did a great job putting together a local database of all party affiliations for candidates running for local office. I thought that I would take the time to expand on his post and show a database of all Orange County Councilmembers (Also OC Board of Supervisors) that will be serving on City Councils starting next month and what party they are affiliated with.

This year marked the first time that The Orange County Register endorsed candidates for office. While the paper has endorsed for or against ballot measures on a regular basis, this was the paper’s first foray into endorsing City Council candidates.

On statewide ballot measures, The Register went 10-1 (91%) with Orange County voters but 7-4 (64%) with California voters.
On local ballot measures, The Register went 7-14 (33%) with the voters.
I’ll still be number crunching over the next days and weeks, but despite what looks like a dismal endorsement record, it appears The Register was actually middle of the pack on their endorsement success rate in Orange County.
