Just received word that HB Councilmember Matthew Harper has decided not to run for the 72nd AD.

Mr Harper has endorsed Los Al Mayor Troy Edgar and announced that he would seek the 72nd AD seat in 2018.

Recently Westminster Councilmember Tyler Diep withdrew from the race.

Pat Robertson wants you to smoke pot

Posted by Thomas Gordon on March 8, 2012

20120308-193729.jpg

Pat Robertson, founder of the 700 Club, has come out and declared the war on drugs a failure.

He went to say that he supports the legalization of marijuana with regulations. He also said he supports ballot measures like those in Colorado and Washington State that would allow those 21 years or older to possess small amounts of marijuana.

Marijuana advocates are seeking to legalize medical marijuana in Santa Ana as well

Does marijuana harm communities or is Pat Robertson right?

Tick-Tock, Deborah…Are You Going to File for Supervisor or Not?

Posted by HBK on March 8, 2012

Almost two weeks ago, I posted here that Deborah Pauly had pulled neither the Ballot Designation Worksheet nor her Declaration of Candidacy form.  Guess what…she still hasn’t pulled those papers.

Is she not running?

It could be she realizes her tiny warchest cannot compare with Todd Spitzer’s enormous funds.  Maybe she’s afraid her ugly incident of ignoring police officer’s instructions and nearly committing DUI will come out across mailers throughout the 3rd Supervisorial District.  Maybe she’s concerned about the lack of support from city councilmembers in the 3rd Supervisorial District.  Maybe she’s concerned that Republican women aren’t backing her – a fellow Republican woman.  Maybe she’s still losing support.

Deborah Pauly only has today and tomorrow to pull and file her Ballot Designation Worksheet and Declaration of Candidacy form.

Time’s ticking, Deborah.  Are you in, or are you out?

Battle for Fullerton: Thirteen Pull Papers for Council

Posted by Chris Nguyen on March 8, 2012

Fullerton City Council MeetingThe Fullerton recall elections will be on the same day as the June 5 Primary.  Fullerton voters will decide whether or not to recall Republican City Councilmen Don Bankhead, Dick Jones, and Pat McKinley.  I blogged about the recall here last week.

Here’s an update on the Fullerton Council candidates (thus far) in the recall replacement elections…

  • Richard Albarran: Registered as No Party Preference (Decline-to-State in the pre-Prop 14 parlance), Albarran pulled papers for all three seats.
  • Rick Alvarez: A Republican Fullerton Transportation & Circulation Commissioner, Alvarez pulled papers for all three seats.
  • Douglas Chaffee: A Democrat and former Fullerton Planning Commissioner, Chaffee pulled papers for all three seats.  He ran for the City Council in 2010.
  • David De Leon: A Republican, De Leon pulled papers for all three seats.
  • Glenn Georgieff: A Democrat and former Fullerton Library Trustee, Georgieff filed papers for Jones’s seat.
  • Matthew Hakim: A Democrat, Hakim pulled papers for Jones’s seat.
  • Travis Kiger: A Republican Fullerton Planning Commissioner and blogger at Friends for Fullerton’s Future, Kiger pulled papers for Jones’s seat.
  • Barry Levinson: A Republican Fullerton Parks & Recreation Commissioner, Levinson pulled papers for all three seats.  He ran for the City Council in 2010.
  • Jane Rands: The Chair of the Fullerton Bicycle Users Subcommittee and Treasurer of the Green Party of Orange County, Rands has filed papers for Bankhead’s seat.  She ran for the State Assembly in 2010.
  • Roberta Reid: A student registered as No Party Preference, Reid has filed for Jones’s seat.
  • Matthew Rowe: Registered as No Party Preference, Rowe has pulled papers for all thre seats.
  • Greg Sebourn: The Chair of the Fullerton Citizen’s Infrastructure Review Commission and Assemblyman Chris Norby’s Alternate on the Republican Central Committee, Sebourn pulled papers for all three seats.  He ran for the City Council in 2010.
  • Paula Williams: A Democrat, Williams pulled papers for Bankhead’s seat.

In a nutshell, here’s what it looks like…

9 possible candidates for Bankhead’s seat:

  • Richard Albarran (NPP)
  • Rick Alvarez (R)
  • Douglas Chaffee (D)
  • David De Leon (R)
  • Barry Levinson (R)
  • Jane Rands (G)
  • Matthew Rowe (NPP)
  • Greg Sebourn (R)
  • Paula Williams (D)

11 possible candidates for Jones’s seat:

  • Richard Albarran (NPP)
  • Rick Alvarez (R)
  • Douglas Chaffee (D)
  • David De Leon (R)
  • Glenn Georgieff (D)
  • Matthew Hakim (D)
  • Travis Kiger (R)
  • Barry Levinson (R)
  • Roberta Reid (NPP)
  • Matthew Rowe (NPP)
  • Greg Sebourn (R)

7 possible candidates for McKinley’s seat:

  • Richard Albarran (NPP)
  • Rick Alvarez (R)
  • Douglas Chaffee (D)
  • David De Leon (R)
  • Barry Levinson (R)
  • Matthew Rowe (NPP)
  • Greg Sebourn (R)

Candidate filing for the Fullerton Recall ends on March 9, the same deadline as most other offices on the June Primary ballot.

(As you might note, I’ve played it straight, reporting just the facts on this post, rather than doing any analysis.  In the interest of full disclosure, I should note my day job is working in the Fullerton office of Assemblyman Chris Norby, who served on the Fullerton City Council from 1984-2002.  One of my co-workers in the office is Fullerton City Councilman Bruce Whitaker, who was elected in 2010 and is not a target of the recall.)

Breaking News! Well Known Community Leader and long time orange county resident Travis Allen Jumps into the 72nd Assembly Race

Posted by OC Insider on March 7, 2012

Have it on good authority that Travis Allen, a local small business owner and well known Orange County political activist, pulled papers to win the 72nd Assembly Race…(he told a source).  My sources tell me that Travis will be well funded and already has over $100,000 in donations and pledges.  His campaign will be guided by a team of experienced and well known Orange County based friends and consultants.

Get this Headline…Huntington Beach Councilman and Former Mayor Joe Carchio asked to be his campaign manager.

For those that know him, Allen’s ability to raise funds, his experience as an activist combined with his apparent campaign team should make him a strong candidate for the 72nd.   Personally, I am looking forward to seeing this race shape.

Only Eight Councilmembers in 3rd Supervisorial District Haven’t Endorsed Spitzer: Including Deborah Pauly, Larry Agran, Beth Krom, Sukhee Kang, Lorri Galloway, Deborah Gavello, and Rebecca Gomez

Posted by HBK on March 7, 2012

Examining Todd Spitzer’s endorsements, it’s clear Deborah Pauly has little support from local City Councilmembers in her bid for Supervisor.  Excluding Pauly herself, only Irvine Democrats Larry Agran, Beth Krom, and Sukhee Kang, along with Tustin Democrats Deborah Gavello and Rebecca Gomez, and Anaheim’s Democrat Lorri Galloway and DTS-turned-Republican Gail Eastman have not endorsed Spitzer – though none of them have endorsed Pauly either.

A major part of a Supervisor’s job is working with local Councilmembers to address their mutual constituents’ concerns, and it’s clear Pauly isn’t up to the job.  Considering the Councilmembers work with each other on regional committees and boards to address regional concerns, it’s even more notable that her colleagues across the Third Supervisorial District know she isn’t up to the job.

The most shocking fact is that all of her colleagues on her own Villa Park City Council endorsed Spitzer, as it’s rare for a Councilmember to endorse a colleague’s opponent, but in this case all of them did. They’re the ones who know her best, and they know she’s not up to the job.

Spitzer is endorsed by the overwhelming majority of councilmembers in the Third Supervisorial District, including all 5 Republican Mayors and the majorities of all 5 Councils with Republican majorities:

Orange (All)
Mayor Carolyn Cavecche (Campaign Co-Chair)
Denis Bilodeau
Jon Dumitru
Tita Smith
Fred Whitaker

Yorba Linda (All)
Mayor Nancy Rikel
John Anderson
Tom Lindsey
Mark Schwing
Jim Winder

Villa Park (All Except for Pauly)
Mayor Rich Ulmer
Bob Fauteux (Endorsed Before His Untimely Passing)
Bill MacAloney
Brad Reese

Tustin (All of the Council’s Republicans)
Mayor Jerry Amante
Al Murray
John Neilsen

Anaheim (Majority)
Mayor Tom Tait
Kris Murray
Harry Sidhu

Irvine (Both of the Council’s Republicans)
Steven Choi
Jeff Lalloway

Newt wins Georgia

Posted by Thomas Gordon on March 6, 2012

20120306-165230.jpg

Today is Super Tuesday where 419 delegates are at stake across several states.

AP just called Georgia for Newt Gingrich, which happens to be his home state and was a must win.

Mitt Romney has won Virginia.

We will be updating returns all night here so check back often.

Who do you think will be the big winner tonight?
