Partisan Hypocrisy Sacramento Style In Full Display

Posted by Craig P. Alexander on August 26, 2015

Yesterday was a banner day for Hypocrisy by the majority party in Sacramento.

As has been written in this blog by myself and others, Democrat Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez has been pushing for the State Auditor’s office to “audit the audit” by the City of Irvine into the mismanaged $200 million plus taxpayer dollars that were squandered by the prior City Council majority lead by then councilman Larry Agran.  The City’s audit (spearheaded by City Council persons Christina Shea and Jeffery Lalloway) has already shown that millions of dollars have been wasted on no bid contracts with firms like Gafcon, Inc. – with whom Assemblywoman Gonzalez has close ties.   Apparently Ms. Gonzalez, afraid that the audit will continue and find reveal more bad actions by Gafcon, Inc. (one of her political supporters), got the Joint Legislative Audit Committee to vote along partisan lines to order the State Auditors office to audit not the Great Park financial mismanagement by Larry Agran, but the audit itself.  Here is the link to the article in the Orange County Register:  State to Investigate Great Park Audit. This audit will occur despite the opposition of many Orange County elected officials lead by Assemblyman Don Wagner.  The State Auditor’s office is to determine if the Irvine audit was “too political.”  Lets see if the State Audit itself is “political” or not.

At the same meeting of the Joint Legislative Audit Committee, the Democrat majority killed a request by Republican Assemblywoman Melissa Melendez (with support by Republican State Senator Jean Fuller) to audit how state funds are being spent by Planned Parenthood in California.  Please keep in mind Assemblywoman Melendez was not asking the committee to “defund” Planned Parenthood, just to audit them to make sure the taxpayer funds being given to PP were being spent as intended.  Given the overwhelming evidence of Planned Parenthood selling baby parts / organs and now whole baby cadavers themselves (often apparently in violation of federal laws) via the videos being released by the Center for Medical Progress, there is more than good reason to audit Planned Parenthood to make sure taxpayer dollars are not being misspent.  The vote was, again, completely along party lines to deny the request.  Here is a link to the full article in the Flashreport (written by eye witness Katy Grimes): Partisan Lawmakers Kill State Audit of Planned Parenthood’s Public Funding.

Once again our State Legislature has proven to be partisan overall.  An audit of the auditors trying to find out what happened to millions and millions of taxpayer dollars regarding the Great Park and no audit of Planned Parenthood in spite of overwhelming evidence of misconduct and perhaps even criminal conduct.  O I forgot, both Gafcon and Planned Parenthood are Democratic party supporters!

A Must Read Interview of Gov. Scott Walker

Posted by Craig P. Alexander on March 11, 2015

People who know me know I am a BIG fan of Governor Scott Walker.  I had the honor of meeting Gov. Walker last Monday night (3/9/15).

For so many reasons I admire him and hope he is our next President of the United States.  The biggest reason I like him is he and his fellow Republicans in Wisconsin actually won the Governor’s office and majorities in both state legislative bodies then actually did what they campaigned on instead of “playing it safe.”  In my opinion the reforms they passed have made Wisconsin a much better place to live, work and start a business.  Plus this Governor has taken on the special interests in his state (mostly the labor unions) three times and best them three times so he has proven he is up for a fight politically.

Jon Fleischman of the Flashreport.org did an excellent interview with which is at Breitbart California Interview: Governor Scott Walker.  In this interview Gov. Walker, in a few words, lays out why he and his fellow Republicans did what they did in Wisconsin right after they were elected rather than kicking the can down the road.  He did what I had hoped President George W. Bush would have done when he was elected with Republican majorities in the House and Senate.

While I know Washington, D.C. is not Wisconsin, I believe Gov. Walker, if he becomes President Walker, and has Republican majorities in Congress will demand and lead for change in the federal government towards limited government, more power to the states (and the people) and away from Washington and strengthen our position in the world.  In brief, it is obvious to me Gov. Walker believes in American Exceptionalism.

Kudos to Jon Fleischman for this interview and I highly commend it to you.

The Climate According to CA Sen. Kevin de Leòn

Posted by Craig P. Alexander on February 11, 2015

And now a break from Chris’ excellent coverage of the 1st District Supervisor race that appears to be going on and on and on.

As I have noted previously, my friend Katy Grimes over at the Flashreport has been publishing some important articles on the growing regulatory impact of the California Air Resources Board (CARB).  An impact that is having everyday negative affects on our state’s economy and is another nail in the coffin for anyone wishing to start a business in this state. CARB’s Mary Nichols Is No ‘Rock Star’

Katy has a new post on this over at the Flashreport reporting that (no surprise to me) Senate Pro Tempore Kevin de Leon is introducing a new package of bills to further increase the regulatory burden on Californians even though the air in our state is cleaner now than since the 1970s.  If  you are at all concerned about the over regulation by CARB now, wait until Sen. de Leon and Gov. Brown’s latest folly is signed into law. CARB is already out of control and these new bills would only further the power of this unaccountable government entity’s control of our lives.

I got a real world example of this yesterday when I put gas in my car – the price of gas jumped in a few days about twenty cents ($.20) per gallon.  Coincidence or CARB’s newest gas taxes going into affect?  I think I know which one it is.

To see Katy’s excellent most recent article on this go to this link: The Climate According to CA Sen. Kevin de Leon.

CARB’s Mary Nichols Is No ‘Rock Star’ Among CA Bureaucrats – Part ll by Flashreport’s Katy Grimes

Posted by Craig P. Alexander on January 2, 2015

Katy Grimes is one of my favorite bloggers / correspondent.  Partly because Katy pursues an important article with passion and doggedly searches out facts.  She follows the facts to wherever they lead and is not afraid to ask those under her microscope tough questions.  Most of the time she writes about government officials or programs that waste our tax dollars or abuse their power.  In California, Katy has a truly target rich environment!

One of the most powerful bureaucrats in California today is Mary Nichols, California’s Air Resources Board Chairwoman.  The CARB is charged with the implementation of California’s Cap and Trade (also known as Cap and Tax) program to allegedly reduce green house gas emissions under AB32.  As Katy lays out in great detail, Ms. Nichols, a lifelong career bureaucrat, has embraced this role with gusto and we, the citizens of California, are and will be paying the price for that gusto in the years to come.

Did you notice that gas prices just jumped .10 to .20 per gallon in the last few days?  Maybe not because gas prices have been dropping like a rock lately.  But the drop is due to market forces like Saudi Arabia keeping oil production high.  That can change at any moment.  But what was the latest jump in California – a new Cap and Trade tax on gasoline ordered by CARB.  And this is only the beginning.

Therefore it is vital that Californians know and understand the bureaucrats who run programs like this one and I highly recommend you spend a few minutes and read Katy Grimes’ articles (the link is to Part II just published Jan. 2nd – there is a link to Part I there). The link to Katy’s article is CARB’s Mary Nichols.

Moorlach Enters SD-37 Race Against Wagner

Posted by Newsletter Reprint on November 30, 2014

Supervisor John Moorlach made a brief bid for Governor in February 2013 and dropping out four months later (Jerry Brown was re-elected to that seat), announcing a bid for the 45th Congressional District in December 2013 and dropping out three months later (Mimi Walters won that seat), and then flirted with bids for the 74th Assembly District (Matt Harper won that seat) and Auditor-Controller (Eric Woolery won that seat).

Today, Jon Fleischman at FlashReport reported on Supervisor John Moorlach’s entry into the 37th Senate District race against Assemblyman Don Wagner to replace Mimi Walters, who will vacate the seat to head to Congress.  Here’s an excerpt of Fleischman’s report

Both Moorlach and Wagner are conservatives, the former being a bit more iconic because of his prediction of the County of Orange’s bankruptcy back in the 90′s.

Neither Moorlach nor Wagner are known as being prolific fundraisers — though Wagner has had his eye in this seat for some time and starts with a head start.

One big question is whether the presence of two conservative foreshadows a more moderate entry into the race.

If Moorlach can raise (or self fund) 200k or more he would be very formidable for anyone, including Wagner, to beat. But that’s a big if. Moorlach floated a bid for Congress last year and dropped it largely as a function of fundraising challenges. Although he was trying to run against the aggressive Mimi Walters, who is a strong fundraiser.

Here’s an excerpt of Moorlach’s announcement…

In the last week I have been making calls when possible, as there were OCTA and Board of Supervisors meetings and the Thanksgiving holidays.  These calls have been extremely positive and I’m putting a campaign team together for the sprint that is called a special election.

Before I officially announce, I wanted you to know first.  There is only one other announced candidate at this time.  In fact, we did lunch a month ago and he is aware that I’ve been mulling this decision over.  I still need to connect with him to let him know that I am even more strongly leaning in running for this seat.

If you’re happy to endorse or support me, that would be great news.  With your permission, I may even include your name in my official announcement, which I hope to release sometime this week.

Thank you for allowing my wife and I to serve you as a County Treasurer-Tax Collector for nearly twelve years.  Thank you for allowing us to serve in the position of a County Supervisor for eight years; where I had a ball achieving numerous significant accomplishments.  Thank you for being a friend and for being on my e-mail tree.

After I make a formal announcement, I hope to engage you in some form or fashion in achieving a successful result next spring.  Together, let’s shake it up, again.

Charles Munger Dipping His Financial Finger Big Time into South Orange County

Posted by Craig P. Alexander on May 21, 2014

It is no secret that Palo Alto physicist and political financier Charles Munger likes to put his money into Republican v. Republican races.  What is his goal?  In my opinion to remake the California Republican Party in his own liberal / moderate image complete with a platform that takes no position on social issues (or takes pro-abortion / pro-homosexual marriage positions).  Thus  you can count on the candidates he backs to appoint delegates to the CRP who will be Charles Munger approved and vote they way he wants.

In the 73rd Assembly District (where I live) there are four Republicans and one Democrat running to replace Diane Harkey who is termed out (and running for the State Board of Equalization).  One of the Republicans is CUSD school board trustee Anna Bryson who I used to support.  However after she won re-election in 2010 she took a sharp turn towards the teachers union and started voting for their causes and positions.  I have posted about this before: Why Does the Teachers Union Love Anna Bryson?  Due to these votes, I and many others who supported her previously do not support her for any elected position including this one.

Now her major financial backer, Charles Munger, has put into his Spirit of Democracy PAC $250,000 to support Ms. Bryson in her quest for the 73rd Assembly seat. John Harbe over at CalNewsroom.com blog has posted an excellent article outlining how Mr. Munger has spent $322,713 (inclusive of the recent $250,000 into his PAC for her) in support of Ms. Bryson (73rd Assembly: Charles Munger).  This is more than all of the candidates have raised for this race combined.

Apparently those of us living in the 73rd Assembly District will now be subjected to TV and other media ads for Ms. Bryson.  While she touts herself as a conservative – her voting record (as I have posted about in the above link) tells a very different story.  In addition, she recently lost a challenge to her ballot statement when the judge found she had made a false and misleading statement in it (and it was stricken and amended by the judge).  I posted on this blog twice about that.  Breaking News & Follow Up the latter post including a link to an excellent article by Katy Grimes over at the Flashreport on this subject.

What is particularly disappointing to me are the number of conservatives who have either not vetted her record, spoken to local activists like myself or simply don’t care about her record and endorse her anyway.  These include people like Edwin Meese, III, George Shultz, Hugh Hewitt and Assemblyman Don Wagner.  I note that none of them live in the 73rd Assembly District.  I don’t know if these conservatives realize it, but by supporting someone like Anna Bryson, they are supporting someone who is now extremely beholden to Charles Munger.  She will likely join him in making the CRP are much more liberal place where conservatives like them are not welcome.  This is in addition to adding her wobbly voting record to the floor of the State Assembly.

For me, I will continue to support the real conservative in the race for the 73rd Assembly District: Dana Point City Councilman Bill Brough. (Why I Am Supporting Bill Brough) I should note that the California Republican Assembly endorsed Bill Brough (CRA RECAP) and he was featured in our recent mailer which Chris Emami just reported on (CRA Newspaper).  Anna Bryson did not even show up to the CRA endorsing convention to ask for the endorsement or defend her voting record – even though she was invited to do so.  Naturally I hope that Charles Munger cannot buy this seat for her and Bill Brough will be one of the top two to advance to November.

Followup on The Anna Bryson Loss in Court

Posted by Craig P. Alexander on April 1, 2014

As I reported last week, 73rd Assembly candidate Anna Bryson was found by a Superior Court Judge in Sacramento to have made a false and misleading statement in her ballot statement.  Here is my post about that: Sacramento Judge Rules.

Today Katy Grimes (a Flash Report Senior Correspondent) did a through post over at the Flashreport about this situation including the various press releases from the Bryson campaign in which Ms. Bryson tries to spin a loss into a win.  Ms. Grimes’ article (which includes some quotes by this blogger) is at AD73: Bryson Campaign Tries…  and it is obvious Ms. Grimes put in a lot of time researching this article including speaking with various members of the Bryson campaign including Anna Bryson herself.  Katy also includes a copy of the Court’s order which clearly states the Judge found Ms. Bryson’s original statement to be false, misleading and inconsistent with the Elections Code by clear and convincing evidence.

I highly recommend you read Ms. Grimes article and her insights into the Bryson’s campaign’s attempts to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear.

Again, for full disclosure I am supporting Dana Point City Councilman Bill Brough who is running to be my next Assemblyperson from the 73rd Assembly District.  I recommend you check out Bill Brough and contact him through his web site at:  http://billbrough.org/  Bill’s next event will be on at 5:30 p.m. on April 22nd at Paradise Automotive in San Juan Capistrano.  For more information contact gina@zariconsulting.com or 714-388-6515.  If you met Bill and talk with him about the issues and his background, I believe you will come away supporting him as I am.

How Low Will They Go!

Posted by Craig P. Alexander on March 13, 2014

I have known Matt McReynolds of the Pacific Justice Institute (PJI) for many years now. Matt is a wonderful man and a great attorney for the conservative cause.  When Matt lost his sight a few years ago, I never heard of him complaining about it once.  Instead Matt focused on applying his excellent attorney skills for the benefit of PJI’s clients as an attorney who happens to be blind instead of playing the victim.  I also give kudos to the Pacific Justice Institute and its President Brad Dacus for working with Matt to help him continue to be an effective attorney for PJI’s clients.

Matt and PJI have been heavily involved in the effort to place on the ballot a referendum about AB1266 the “Bathroom Bill.”  The effort came close to qualifying for the ballot but is just under 17,000 short of the number needed and PJI, many other attorneys and activists are going over the disqualified signatures and finding many, many instances of institutional bias by some Registrar of Voters offices and the Secretary of State’s office.

Now Matt has discovered that even his own signature was disqualified!  I commend Matt’s article over at the Flashreport (Disenfranchising the Disabled) to you.  This is a new low for the various Registrars of Voters and the Secretary of State’s office involved.  Of course I hope my friends fighting against AB1266 are successful not only because of the specific issue involved, but for the sake of our Initiative process and election integrity in California.

AD-72: What Will Edgar & Allen Do in Their All-Republican November Matchup?

Posted by Chris Nguyen on June 11, 2012

This week, I’ll be doing a series analyzing OC’s multi-candidate Assembly races that have now narrowed down to two. Our opener is the surprise in AD-72.

Conventional wisdom held that if any OC district was going to feature an intraparty battle in November (courtesy of Prop 14), it was going to be the Republicans in AD-74 between Allan Mansoor and Leslie Daigle or the Democrats in AD-69 between Tom Daly and either Julio Perez or Michele Martinez.

Lo and behold, AD-72 came out of nowhere with an all-Republican November matchup between Los Alamitos Mayor Troy Edgar and Huntington Beach Businessman Travis Allen.

Troy Edgar & Travis Allen

AD-72 Matchup: Mayor Troy Edgar (R-Los Alamitos) vs. Businessman Travis Allen (R-Huntington Beach)

Conventional wisdom held that the Republican vote would split three ways between Edgar, Allen, and OC Board of Education Member Long Pham, while Joe Dovinh would hold most of the Democrats, with a small number of votes going to Democrat Albert Ayala.

Most people (myself included) predicted an Edgar vs. Dovinh matchup in November, a few predicted Allen vs. Dovinh, even fewer predicted Pham vs. Dovinh, but did anyone predict Edgar vs. Allen?

How did this happen?  Edgar was weaker than expected allowing Allen and Pham to eat up more Republican votes while Ayala was stronger than expected eating up much of Dovinh’s votes from Democrats.

This race was incredibly evenly divided.  First place was quite low at 28.2% and last place rose up to 13.6%.  Second, third, and fourth place were 0.5% apart.

Troy Edgar 17,594 28.2%
Travis Allen 12,300 19.7%
Joe Dovinh 12,055 19.3%
Long Pham 11,959 19.2%
Albert Ayala 8,492 13.6%

(Some readers may be wondering if Dovinh or Pham could still catch Allen with the remaining uncounted ballots.   There just aren’t enough out there. 62,400 out of the 409,824 ballots counted in Orange County so far cast votes in AD-72, which equals 15.2% of the votes.  There are 17,125 uncounted ballots remaining in Orange County, which leaves approximately 2,603 votes remaining in AD-72.  To make up the current 245-vote deficit, Dovinh would need to be ahead of Allen by 9.4%.  Dovinh never led Allen by more than 5.2%.  To make up his current 341-vote deficit, Pham would need to be ahead of Allen by 13.1% and also be 3.7% ahead of Dovinh.  Pham never led Allen by more than 5.5%.  Now, of that 17,125 uncounted ballots, there are 15,642 provisionals, which do tend to favor Democrats; presumably, 2,378 of those provisionals cast votes in the AD-72 race, but provisionals have a higher invalidity rate than other ballots.  Note also that Albert Ayala is still there sucking up a good chunk of votes that would otherwise go to Dovinh.)

The Edgar and Allen camps now face an interesting quandary: tack left, tack right, or try to do both.  During the primary, Edgar and Allen both tried to run right, each proclaiming he was the real conservative and the other was closet liberal.

Both Edgar and Allen have interesting partisan histories.  Edgar was a registered Democrat until switching his registration to Republican the same week that he filed to run for office for the first time when he did so in his successful bid for Los Alamitos City Council.  Allen has donated large sums of money to Democrats, as reported by Jon Fleischman over at FlashReport.

If they run right, Edgar and Allen can each undercut each other’s bases and grab Pham’s supporters.   If they run left, they can pick up Dovinh and Ayala’s supporters.  Will Edgar and Allen both run right?  Will they both run left?  Will one run right while the other runs left?  Will they attempt to be all things to all people, running right in mail to Republicans, running left in mail to Democrats, and proclaiming their independent/bipartisan/maverick qualities in mail to No Party Preference voters?

In the primary, both men were willing to dip into their personal funds to finance their campaigns.  Edgar dropped $100,000 while Allen dropped $95,500.  (By the way, Pham dropped $100,000 while Dovinh only dropped $1,000.)  Many people will note that candidates often loan their campaigns money to make their warchests look bigger than they actually are.  Well, not in AD-72!  The largest remaining warchest is less than $25,000.  Edgar, Allen, and Pham all spent the bulk of the money they dumped in their campaigns.  To recoup that money, they’re going to have to raise it.

Edgar and Allen will need to spend the summer raising more money or else be willing to dip into their personal fortunes again.  Either way, this should be an interesting November in AD-72, as Democrats laugh at Republican money being spent against Republicans.

(For our more literature-oriented readers, I will note in the race between Troy Edgar and Travis Allen, Marilynn Poe has endorsed her Council colleague, Edgar.)
