55th AD Watch: Another Candidate Dual Run?

Posted by Allen Wilson on June 25, 2013

We reported last month about Diamond Bar Councilwoman Ling-Ling Chang flirting a run for two offices:  City Council and State Assembly.

OC Political learned that Diamond Bar Councilman Steve Tye who is up for council re-election this November is flirting a run for State Assembly in the 55th AD in 2014 as well.

When Tye was confronted about his flirtatious run for two offices replied, “Where did you hear that from?”

Pols should learn not to answer a question with a question.

Now, it begs the question:  Why are pols bringing out the yardstick and the crystal ball?

Candidates should learn that running for office doesn’t allow you to use two lifelines as if running for public office is a game show.

Feds Subpoena Central Basin Water District: Calderon Saga Continues

Posted by Allen Wilson on June 14, 2013

OC Political has penned three critical articles relative to the Calderon Saga:  Senator Ron Calderon Capitol Office Raid by FBI, Update on Calderon FBI Raid, and U.S Attorney subpoena’s Senator de Leon.

Today, The Sacramento Bee reports that the Feds has subpoena the Central Basin Municipal Water District the water agency based in the City of Commerce, which is coincidentally in the Senate district of State Senator Ron Calderon (D-Montebello).

Joseph Lagaspi, spokesman for the Water District says:

“I can’t comment on the particulars of it.  This is all brand new to us.”

Mr. Lagaspi goes on to stress the water district plans to:

“cooperate fully with the authorities.”

The Los Angeles Times has reported on allegations of cronyism with regards to the water district and the two brothers, Ron Calderon and Tom Calderon, wrote today about the subpoena that seeks:

“documents related to contracts awarded by the water district, invoices, purchase orders, voicemails and information related to how officials there accepted or rejected bids.”

It is interesting to note from the Los Angeles Times reports Senator Calderon and then-Assemblyman Charles Calderon has defended the Central Basin Water district through legislative efforts.  Furthermore Los Angeles Times reports, in 2009, Senator Calderon thwart an audit of the water agency books.

It appears that the Calderon saga keeps growing with no end in sight.

Though, as promised OC Political is continuing to monitor the story as it unfolds and will keep you updated.

Sacramento Saga Continues: U.S. Attorney subpoenas Senator de León

Posted by Allen Wilson on June 7, 2013

OC Political reported breaking news on Tuesday regarding Senator Ron Calderon (D-Whittier) office was raided by the FBI.

My colleague Chris Nguyen elaborated with an article following up the breaking news about Senator Calderon and the FBI raid.

Now, it is reported by the Sacramento Bee that U.S. Attorney has subpoena Senator Kevin de León (D-Los Angeles).

In a statement, Senator de León said he received a subpoena on Thursday.

The Sacramento Bee reports that Senator de León intended “to cooperate fully” and will be interviewed by a grand jury in July.

As the saga coming out of Sacramento continues OC Political will be on top of the story to bring you the latest updates.

Senator Ron Calderon office raided by FBI

Posted by Allen Wilson on June 4, 2013

OC Political learn from Scott Lay of “The Nooner” that State Senator Ron Calderon (D-Whittier) Capitol office was raided by the FBI:

I am hearing from multiple Capitol sources that the FBI has raided the Capitol office of Senator Ron Calderon’s (D-Montebello) . Senate sergeants are currently stationed outside of Calderon’s office. Visitors are simply being told that the office “is closed.”

An FBI raid does not imply guilt, and there is no indication what the investigation is about. The Capitol is abuzz right now that the investigation includes other members, although the subject is unclear.

Investigative Reporter Page St. John of the Los Angeles Times tweets:

FBI confirms it has agents executing a search warrant at the California Capitol, “taking evidence respective to an ongoing investigation

FBI says California Capitol search warrant remains under seal. US Attorney confirms search of office of Sen. Ron Calderon D-Montebello.

Stay tuned for continuing updates here on OC Political with regards to latest rumbling from Sacramento.

Project + Recording = Controversy

Posted by Allen Wilson on May 30, 2013

The cities of Cypress and Los Alamitos are in a cat fight over a 33-acre Prologis Project to construct 725,000 square foot warehousing and light manufacturing center.

Earlier this month a meeting was held at a venue between Cypress Councilman Doug Bailey, Los Alamitos Mayor Warren Kusumoto, Assemblyman Travis Allen and Allen’s Chief of Staff.

The initial purpose was to hammer out differences with regards to the Prologis Project between the two cities, but those differences took a ugly turn of allegations by Councilman Bailey that Mayor Kusumoto illegally recorded a conversation.

The Event News reports of much detailed accounts of the allegations made by Councilman Bailey.

The Controversy does not end there as a glossy flyer was disseminated through out the City of Los Alamitos with an Anti-Kusumoto hit piece from an anonymous group that calls themselves “Concerned Los Alamitos Residents”.

Los Alamitos Mayor Kusumoto disputes the claim of an illegal recording.

The Cypress City Council has sent a letter to the Los Alamitos City Council registering their concerns as they have no confidence in Mayor Kusumoto, which is a serious matter as Kusumoto’s integrity is being questioned by many inside and outside of Los Alamitos.

Though, the question needs to be raised with regards to the controversial project that cause spat between two neighboring cities:  Why is Assemblyman Allen in the midst of all of this?

Assemblyman Allen says, “We’re trying to get both sides to come together and talk.  I think the two communities need to come together and work together for the betterment of both communities.”

Assemblyman Allen has voiced his support on a project that is NOT even in his district, though he is on a “create jobs” mission.

Ironically, the project is in Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva’s district, which she appears to be MIA.

The recording incident is one thing, but the matter reeks corruption as backroom deals diminishes public trust of their own local government, especially when you have a state legislator sitting at the table that only raises eyebrows.

It is with hope that the controversy to be resolved soon so that the residents of Cypress and Los Alamitos get the answers that they deserve.

Assembly Candidate announces campaign in Neighboring District

Posted by Allen Wilson on May 25, 2013

On May 2nd, OC Political posted an article by asking the question:  “Ling-Ling Chang runs for council re-election AND Assembly?”

In today’s edition of the Diamond Bar-Walnut Patch answers the question with confirmation that Councilwoman Chang is indeed running for both offices, which means running dual campaigns is a tough one with considerable political risks.

Though, Councilwoman Chang made her announcement at a press conference at Pacific Palms Resort in the City of Industry, which is located in the 57th Assembly District represented by Assemblyman Ian Calderon (D-Whittier).

However, an Assembly Candidate should make such announcement in the district he/she running for and not a neighboring district.

Suffice to say…pulling up an Assembly District is very simple by going to Google.

Whoever advised Councilwoman Chang to hold a press conference in a neighboring district has committed a huge political blunder for the candidate.

Assemblyman Hagman: Let Each City Decide to Roast Marshmallows

Posted by Allen Wilson on May 16, 2013

Assemblyman Curt Hagman (R-Chino Hills, District 55) offers his two cents regarding the proposed fire pits ban at Los Angeles and Orange County beaches by the AQMD:

Beach bonfires have long been part of the California way of life. Roasting marshmallows, making smores, and spending quality time with family and friends next to an open fire have created countless memories for generations of Californians. But if a government agency gets its way, such experiences will be a thing of the past and the beaches will be deserted after 5 PM.

The South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) recently unveiled a proposal to ban all beach fire pits/rings within Orange and Los Angeles counties. Such fire pits would cease to exist along our coastline. Ironically, I find it amusing that the agency that oversees development of California beaches, the Coastal Commission, sees the fire pits as a form of recreation and wants the rings to stay.

The AQMD says fire pits contribute to Southern California’s pollution and harm public health. The chairman of the District even went so far to compare the smoke from the bonfires to “carpet bombing” during the Vietnam War.  To compare beach bonfires to the horrors of war is simply ludicrous. Such a comparison is offensive and it is no wonder that thousands of people have risen up to oppose the fire pit ban.  Most reasonable people would know that the environmental impact of beach bonfires is miniscule compared to other sources of smoke.

To be fair, fire pits do raise some legitimate public safety and health issues. For example, some Newport Beach residents who live next to the beach have complained about exposure to wood smoke and floating embers that have drifted to their homes. But they knowingly bought a house next to a beach with fire rings already present.  The heart of the matter is local control. Let the Newport Beach city council and residents make the choice. Let the cities and counties decide on the beach fire pits as it concerns their economy, their neighborhoods, and their quality-of-life. If the top concern of Newport Beach’s residents is soot, then it can ban its fire pits if they so desire.

Meanwhile Huntington Beach, which generates $1 million in revenue from beach parking and the purchase of bonfire supplies, can decide to keep its pits in place to maintain tourism. Plus add in the indirect value of the public spending money in beach towns because of family events around the fire pits. To impose a sweeping ban that the AQMD proposes is an unwieldy and unfair one-size-fits-all solution.

Many residents, including my Assembly colleagues who represent the area, support local control that would allow beach fire pits to continue to exist. I believe it is a sensible solution that can satisfy everyone. Equally important, local control helps keep government closest to the people.

The AQMD is a powerful agency with little public oversight. The regulations that the non-elected board members propose can have far-reaching impacts on our economy that are often little-noticed by the public – unless they touch something as popular as beach fire pits. Making the District more transparent is a topic for another day.

The Board of Directors of AQMD will vote on the fire pits ban in June. I hope the board heeds the voices of people who support local control. Until then, we must continue to make our voices heard by letting AQMD know how we feel. We cannot let a small minority of extreme environmentalists and NIMBY activists take away a special part of California’s culture.

Ling-Ling Chang runs for council re-election AND Assembly?

Posted by Allen Wilson on May 2, 2013

Assemblyman Curt Hagman (R-Chino Hills, District 55) is serving his third and final term in the lower house of the California legislature.  Hagman is unable to run for another term due to term limit rules.

OC Political just learned today that Diamond Bar Councilwoman Ling-Ling Chang will be having her Assembly kickoff campaign at a fundraiser on May 31, 2013 in Rowland Heights.

The 55th Assembly District covers all or portions of the following cities:  Brea, Diamond Bar, Chino Hills, City of Industry, Placentia, Rowland Heights, Walnut, West Covina and Yorba Linda.  The district leans Republican as the registration is 41% Republican, 31% Democrat and 22% No Party Preference (formerly known as DTS).

Councilwoman Chang is serving her first term on the Diamond Bar City Council who is up for election this November.

However, Chang has come out of the gate as the first Assembly candidate for the June 2014 Primary Election will raise some eyebrows for Diamond Bar voters.

We tried to reach out to Councilwoman Chang as to whether she is running for re-election for council AND Assembly and got no reply.

There are other potential candidates who are on the bench such as Placentia Councilman Jeremy Yamaguchi and Walnut-Valley Unified School District Trustee Phillip Chen, but have not declared as an Assembly candidate.

There maybe a wildcard candidate that could change the dynamics in the contest this contributor learned today.

Suffice to say that the 55th Assembly District will be one of many open seats in 2014 to be watched by many political observers.
