Charles Munger and California Dental IE PAC meddles in AD-55

Yesterday, my colleague Craig Alexander reported that Charles Munger was meddling in the AD-73 contest in support for Anna Bryson.
It is now reported that the California Dental Association (CDA) IE PAC decides to get involved in the AD-55 contest in support for Ling-Ling Chang with a $129,000 drop.
The CDA IE PAC spent $100,000 on TV/Cable Buy and $29,000 on polling.
The Spirit of Democracy PAC controlled by Charles Munger gave CDA IE PAC $29,000 to pay for the polling, which was more of an “in-kind” donation.
The polling was mysteriously conducted few weeks ago to households in the AD-55 contest including yours truly relatives living in Orange County. The poll initially asked for the registered to vote female in the household, then asked for the registered to vote male, if the female wasn’t home. The poll asked basic questions who the voter would vote for Governor, U.S. Representative, which they finally asked questions about Phillip Chen and Ling Ling Chang.
The interesting aspect of the poll was they provided bio statement for each candidate and asked the likeliness of voting for either candidate. When the pollster mentioned Ling Ling Chang, the first thing they stated was that “She was BORN and RAISED in Southern California”. The respondent to the poll stated that they were unlikely to vote for Ling Ling Chang, because they bluntly stated that the “raised and born” part was a lie based on an article from the Orange County Register by Martin Wiskol. The second part mentioned Ling Ling Chang being in charge of an educational organization for 8 years. The respondent again bluntly told the pollster that if someone wants to be part of education, then they need to be in the classroom.
Nevertheless, the CDA IE PAC is also meddling in AD-9 and AD-64 contests supporting Democrats Elk Grove Councilman Jim Cooper and Carson Councilman Mike Gipson, respectively.
This contributor was warned that Charles Munger would find a way to meddle in the AD-55 contest and surely he has one way or the other.
Though, for a IE PAC to coordinate efforts with Munger is very chilling as it should serve as a warning to voters in the 55th AD that Ling Ling Chang isn’t the true Conservative that she is portraying herself as, because a particular IE PAC has already backed Democrat candidates for Assembly.

Flawed Editorial Endorsement for Steve Tye

The San Gabriel Valley Tribune announced their editorial endorsement for Steve Tye in the 55th State Assembly contest.
The newspaper endorsement of Diamond Bar Councilman Steve Tye for State Assembly took me aback about few inaccurate facts of the editorial and requires me to set the record straight about Mr. Tye who has been my councilman for 9 long years.
Mr. Tye does not have a slight lead in the fundraising part of the campaign. According to Mr. Tye’s campaign finance reports he has raised an anemic $130,497, which includes the $100,000 he loaned to his campaign. It is critical to note that he only has raised $30,000, which is a far cry from the $250,000 to get past through the June Primary.
Yorba Linda Councilman Craig Young did flirt a run for State Assembly last year, but withdrew from the contest to focus the embattled efforts of a recall campaign against him that is underway pending verification of signatures from the Orange County Registrar of Voters. Mr. Young name is not on the ballot as a candidate for State Assembly.
Mr. Tye was notably absent during the 2006 Measure L known as Library Parcel Tax that would have raised $34 Million from Diamond Bar Taxpayers until the last days of the campaign that he came out against the proposal. Mr. Tye forgets in May of 2006 he made the motion to instruct staff to draft language to place the Library Parcel Tax on the ballot that cost taxpayers $50,000.
Mr. Tye lacks ability to comprehend that fees are taxes, because in September of 2010 as a Councilman he voted to raised fees across the board tied with cost of living for the next three years. Mr. Tye was adamant that the fee increase proposal was according to city minutes “not a tax but a user fee”, “was a proponent for adding a fee for licensing a cat”, “it is appropriate if it costs $100 to issue a permit to have a water heater installed in his home that he should pay the $100” and “likes the idea of someone plans to add to his home he pays the fees for it.”
Mr. Tye claims he was mad about junkets, but never curtailed the $1,150 monthly defined benefits that he and his colleagues on the council enjoy that gives them the privilege of medical benefits and ability to participate in a generous CalPERS pension plan.
The editorial says that Mr. Tye was not sure what kind of legislation he would propose specifically. Frankly, I have seen his actions up front, because his rhetoric along the campaign trail doesn’t match his record. Mr. Tye love for fees, waste of taxpayers funds and grandiose defined benefits is a recipe for bigger government that Sacramento politicians has long been accustomed to.
Therefore, Mr. Tye doesn’t deserve to be promoted to Sacramento as the next Assemblyman from the 55th AD.

AD-55 Watch: Crime Victims United Endorses Phillip Chen for Assembly

We received this press release from the Phillip Chen for State Assembly campaign:
Crime Victims United of California (CVUC), the state’s leading crime victim advocacy group, has endorsed Republican Phillip Chen in the race for the 55th Assembly District.
“As a Reserve Deputy Sheriff, Phillip Chen is part of the public safety community. He is dedicated to protecting our neighborhoods and schools and to standing up for the rights of crime victims,” said CVUC President Harriet Salarno. “We are proud to join with Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas, Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens, San Bernardino County District Attorney Mike Ramos, former L.A. County District Attorney Steve Cooley and others in our law enforcement community in endorsing Phillip Chen to be the next Assemblyman from the 55th district.”
Phillip Chen is a local Republican leader, small business owner, elected school board member, and reserve deputy sheriff. He recently received his doctorate degree from the University of Southern California.
Phillip is running in the 55th Assembly district with the support of incumbent Republican Assemblyman Curt Hagman.
Crime Victims United of California is comprised of two distinct, yet complementary groups — a legislative advocacy arm that works to strengthen victims’ rights laws and a political action committee that lends its endorsement and financial backing to pro-victim candidates.

AD-55 Watch: Ling-Ling Chang Quacks out of SGV Tribune Editorial Board Meeting

The San Gabriel Valley Tribune Editorial Board had an Q & A session with the candidates running for State Assembly in the 55th Assembly District.
Assembly candidates Phillip Chen (R), Steve Tye (R) and Greg Fritchle (D) attended the meeting with the paper.
Unfortunately, Ling-Ling Chang was a no-show for a meeting with the Editorial Board. Chang also skipped out of last Tuesday’s candidate forum at the Salt and Light Ministry at Calvary Chapel in Diamond Bar.
Is it possible that she snubbed the meeting with the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, because she did not earn the paper’s endorsement when she first ran for Diamond Bar City Council in 2009?
Though, Chang thought it was important to let the world know via Twitter that two mallard ducks came by her campaign headquarters last Saturday in Brea.
However, Chang should realize that quacking out of a meeting with the San Gabriel Valley Tribune is nothing to quack about.
If the voters in the 55th Assembly District can’t take Chang seriously as their next Assemblymember, then her candidacy is just all about quacks.

AD-55 Watch: Biographies Scrutinized

The Orange County Register published an article scrutinizing the Assembly candidates biographies, but candidate Ling-Ling Chang education claims gets top grilling.
The view of the article is behind a firewall, which requires payment to have reading privileges.
It has been reported in previous campaign materials, publications and city of Diamond Bar website that Chang earned a degree in Biology from UC, Riverside and attending Harvard.
However, the article explains on the contrary that Chang has no degree in biology, which means she dropped out of UC Riverside and Chang explained that she is doing her studies “online” for a degree from Harvard.
Sadly, Chang offers no apologies for attending Harvard, but she should be reminded that attending an Ivy League university physically on campus is totally different than one taking courses behind a keyboard.
Unfortunately, Chang faults the inaccuracies to the City of Diamond Bar Public Information Officer, which is an insult to the professionalism of a municipal employee that is of high regard in and out of Diamond Bar City Hall.
If an Assembly candidate spends all of the time going to meetings as a councilmember on the taxpayers dime should have gone to night school and gotten a degree instead of polishing a political résumé for far too long.
It is ironic that an Assembly candidate is using SCA 5 on a campaign platform who only holds a high school diploma.
We are in a midst of a campaign season and candidates should be grilled until Election Day.
As for one candidate to embellish education claims brings bad taste who is being endorsed by high profile Republican elected officials such as Rep. Ed Royce and Senate Minority Leader Senator Bob Huff.
The voters in the 55th Assembly District deserves the truth as to who will be their next Assemblymember.
It is good to know now than with regrets for the constituents who could be stuck with a legislator for the next 2 or 12 years.

AD-55 Watch: GOP Assembly Candidate supports NPP Candidate for City Council

Local elected Republicans support Republicans for local office, right?
Not exactly with GOP Assembly candidate Diamond Bar Councilwoman Ling-Ling Chang.
The Diamond Bar-Walnut Patch article dated January 16, 2014 revealed that Chang is supporting Betty Tang for Walnut City Council.
It was brought to this author’s attention Tang is a registered voter but as a NPP (No Party Preference).
Furthermore, Chang opts not to endorse Republicans former Assemblyman now Walnut Councilman Bob Pacheco and Councilwoman Mary Su.
Both Pacheco and Su have been long standing Republicans whom has done very well with limited government philosophy and served the Walnut community with distinction.
Perhaps, it is because Chang was once a DTS (Decline-to-State) voter in 1998 and again in 2004 until she finally became a Republican in 2006 after being elected to the Walnut-Valley Water District Board of Directors in 2005.
Perhaps, it is because Chang doesn’t want to ruffle any political feathers with her protege Senator Huff whom still have icy feelings towards Bob Pacheco, which is widely known in local political circles in the San Gabriel Valley, due to Huff’s bitter lost in 1998 for State Assembly to Pacheco.
GOP Assembly candidate going around in Republican circles seeking the party’s blessings should give pause to GOP activists.
Yes, Local Elected Republicans should support local Republican candidates, especially if one is a Republican Assembly candidate, because Republicans want to maintain party philosophy of limited government and not those that have no preference to any political party like Tang.
By showing up at GOP circles and functions is one thing, but GOP activists should not be blinded by facts and the truth of a GOP Assembly candidate.
Yes, facts are stubborn things!

Yorba Linda Councilmembers Young and Lindsey served Recall Notice

As many were prepping for the holidays last month Yorba Linda Councilmembers Tom Lindsey and Craig Young were served with recall notice at the December 17th city council meeting.
The signature requirement for the recall of Yorba Linda councilmembers is 20% if the registration is less than 50,000, but at least 10,000. The last report of registration by the county election officials to the Secretary of State was on February 10, 2013, which shows that there were 40,501 registered voters in Yorba Linda.
The recall proponents will need to gather 8,100 signatures to mount a recall campaign against the two councilmembers within 120 days.
Councilmember Lindsey was elected in 2010 and stands for re-election this November.
Councilmember Young was elected in 2012 and stands for re-election in 2016 who is also running this June 2014 for State Assembly in the 55th Assembly District, which will be problematic as recall could hamper his Assembly prospects.
Orange County Register reported late summer of 2012 the recall efforts of Councilman John Anderson failed because the proponents did not get enough signatures.
NOTICE OF INTENT TO CIRCULATE RECALL PETITION

TO THE HONORABLE Thomas H. Lindsey: Pursuant to Section 11020, California Elections Code, the undersigned registered qualified voters of Yorba Linda, in the State of California, hereby give notice that we are the proponents of a recall petition and that we intend to seek your recall and removal from the office of City Councilmember, in Yorba Linda, California and to demand election of a successor in that office.
The grounds for recall of Councilmember Thomas H. Lindsey are:
Broke his campaign pledge of low-density development.
a. Voted against an urgency ordinance, which would have placed a moratorium on high density development and that would help further a ballot measure to eliminate or reduce high-density housing sites that include 4-story buildings with heights up to 50 feet.
b. Refused to listen to concerned residents and deal harshly with the County regarding development of over 500 homes in fire sensitive land near the northeast corridor of the City.
c. Lindsey’s vote to kill the high-density moratorium is an abandonment of his signed statement in his 2010 Contract with Yorba Linda, which pledged to voters that all infill development projects would be consistent with their existing and surrounding neighborhoods.
Is fiscally irresponsible and unethical.
a. Put the City at risk for a $19 million breach of contract lawsuit with the County and the Sheriffs Department in an ill-fated attempt to renegotiate Yorba Linda’s police services contract with the Brea Police Department, after the police contract was signed and approved by both the City and County.
b. Participated in a public smear campaign of three fellow councilmembers, voting to publicly disclose confidential closed-session information used during the November 2012 election.
Councilman Lindsey responded to the recall:

It will cost Yorba Linda taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars in filing fees alone. This recall is a misguided attempt by a narrow special interest to bully council into adopting extreme policies that will hurt our economy, kill jobs and also cost residents hundreds of thousands in attorneys’ fees.
A city-wide moratorium on new construction in response to this special interest group’s opposition is a disproportionate reaction we cannot afford. It’s the same kind of reactionary policy-making that takes place in Sacramento which is driving so many businesses from California.
This recall is a reckless erosion of council’s independence from bullying special interests. It’s an intimidation tactic that sets a precedent on future councils’ willingness to do what is right for ALL residents, not bend to the will of special interests.
I’m a low-density housing advocate who carefully negotiates as opposed to recklessly abandons the fiduciary responsibility owed taxpayers and I’m fully supportive of the diligent efforts by our Sheriffs. I’ve worked hard to help get our finances in order, already saving us millions in interest, and am disappointed this group would waste tens of thousands of taxpayer dollars on this unnecessary effort.

The Yorba Linda Residents for Responsible Representation (YLRRR) responds to Lindsey and Young:
We do know how much it costs. Did you know that ALL Yorba Linda taxpayers are paying over $100,000 a month to subsidize the underpayment of landscape maintenance fees by certain districts in the Landscape Maintenance Assessment District? These districts are supposed to be self sufficient and pay their own way. Craig Young and Tom Lindsey support these subsidies.Did you know that high-density housing has increased 70% in Yorba Linda and that it is decreasing ALL of our property values in the millions? There is absolutely no way a 4-story, 125 unit, multi-family apartment complex is going to increase property values adjacent to single-family homes. When presented with an opportunity to place a moratorium on high-density development so voters could correct high-density zoning issues, both Young and Lindsey cow towed to developers and voted against the moratorium.
Did you know that Young and Lindsey put the City at risk for a $19 million lawsuit with the County of Orange because they both made an ill-fated attempt to renegotiate our police contract with the City of Brea? The City had a signed contract with the Sheriff’s Department and both Young and Lindsey were willing to violate the terms of that contract and pay more for police services from Brea.
Lindsey and Young are costing our city millions. A recall is a drop in the bucket.
