Third Supervisorial District: Todd Spitzer in the Mail

Posted by Chris Nguyen on May 3, 2012

Excluding the Anaheim TOT mail (which has nothing to do with the June election), I received my fourth mailer of the primary election cycle on Tuesday.  The first mailer was from Congressman Ed Royce’s campaign on April 4,  the second one was from Todd Spitzer’s campaign for the Third Supervisorial District on April 19, and the third one was another Royce piece on April 28.  This mailer is the second I’ve received from Spitzer’s campaign, and the fourth I’ve received from any campaign this cycle.  The piece describes Spitzer’s pension reform proposal.

The exterior portion of the piece on the address/postage side has Spitzer’s name along with his logo and web site – this basically has his name in huge type thrice as a way to reinforce name ID even among voters who won’t open/read the piece.  It also states that Spitzer is “The only candidate for Supervisor with a comprehensive plan to Reform Public Employee Pensions and Benefits…and the experience to carry it out!”  It also notes Spitzer’s “‘A’ Rating from the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association (Legislative Scorecard).”

The other side of the exterior portion has the headline “Taxpayers Support the Todd Spitzer Pension Reform Plan” and a quote from Reed Royalty regarding Spitzer’s endorsement by OCTaxPAC (Orange County Taxpayers Association PAC).  It also includes the Orange County Register logo along with a statement that “Spitzer’s Plan was Published” in the paper on April 6.  Spitzer’s name is mentioned thrice, reinforcing his name ID even among voters who won’t open/read the piece and who received the piece in the mail with the address/postage side face down.

The interior portion discusses “Todd Spitzer’s Comprehensive Plan to Reform Government Employee Pensions” with six points:

  1. “Private Sector Model”
  2. “Control Payroll Growth”
  3. “Treat New Hires Differently”
  4. “Freeze Pension Benefits”
  5. “Stop Pension Spiking”
  6. “Mandate Employee Contributions”

The interior also highlights Spitzer’s motto from his brochures: “Integrity.  Experience.  Results.”  It also repeats his endorsement by the Orange County Taxpayers Association.

The piece is 8.5″ x 11″ and becomes 17″ x 11″ when opened up.

CD-39: Ed Royce in the Mail

Posted by Chris Nguyen on April 30, 2012

Excluding the Anaheim TOT mail (which has nothing to do with the June election), I received my third mailer of the primary election cycle on Saturday.  The first mailer was from Congressman Ed Royce’s campaign on April 4, and the second one was from Todd Spitzer’s campaign for the Third Supervisorial District on April 19.  This April 28 mailer is the second I’ve received from Royce’s campaign, and the third from any campaign this cycle.  The piece emphasizes economic themes.

The exterior portion of the piece on the address/postage side reads, “Rep. Ed Royce is Working to Grow Our Economy and Create Jobs!” along with Royce’s logo and web site – this basically has his name in huge type thrice as a way to reinforce name ID even among voters who won’t open/read the piece.  The other side of the exterior portion has various “Now Hiring” signs and a “Help Wanted” sign, along with “Rep. Ed Royce is working to see signs like this go up all over Southern California once again!”  Royce’s name is in large type and in a different color, again reinforcing his name ID even among voters who won’t open/read the piece and who received the piece in the mail with the address/postage side face down.

The interior portion discusses the “Royce Plan” to create more jobs.  There are four bullet points for the Royce Plan:

  • “Slash our skyrocketing national debt.”
  • “Increase domestic energy supply.”
  • “Lower fees on small and medium size businesses,”
  • “Cut Washington’s red tape.”

The interior also highlights a Baltimore Sun op-ed that praised legislation Royce introduced and also emphasizes, “Ed Royce knows that real economic growth has always and will always come from the private sector.”

Strangely, there’s a Twitter logo and a Facebook logo next to Royce’s web site address.  The Royce campaign is not the only one to do this.  The April 19 Spitzer mailer did this as well and also included a LinkedIn logo.  I’ve also seen other random pieces of non-political mail that do this too.  I understand why these logos are included in an email or on a web site because the viewer can click on those to be taken to the business/organization/campaign’s social media pages.  However, it doesn’t make sense on a paper mail piece.  Nobody can click on the logo on a paper mail piece.  These logos are needless clutter on the mail pieces.  The mailers should just send the voters to the candidate’s web site, where they can then click on the logos there to connect to the candidate’s social media pages.

The piece is 8.5″ x 11″ and becomes 17″ x 11″ when opened up.

Third Supervisorial District: Todd Spitzer in the Mail

Posted by Chris Nguyen on April 20, 2012

Excluding the Anaheim TOT mail (which has nothing to do with the June election), I received my second mailer of the primary election cycle yesterday.  The first mailer was from Congressman Ed Royce on April 4.  This one is from Todd Spitzer’s campaign for the Third Supervisorial District.

The exterior portion of the piece emphasizes Spitzer’s endorsements from various elected officials, particularly that of incumbent Third District Supervisor Bill Campbell.  The interior portion emphasizes his previous job experience and has a “Growing Orange County’s Economy” section and a “Standing Up for Taxpayers” section.

The piece is 8.5″ x 11″ and becomes 8.5″ x 22″ when opened up.  (Sorry about the split down the middle of the interior.  My scanner was having trouble due to the large size of the Spitzer mailer.)

Anaheim Mailbox: Larry Larsen Is Back

Posted by Former Blogger Chris Emami on April 16, 2012

I received this in my mailbox this past week and wanted to share it with our readers:

Needless to say this is getting really old. I am sure that OCEA has some kind of master plan, but targeting 2 Councilmembers that are both not up for re-election until 2014. They are going to make a strong play for the open seats on the Council, but I am interested to know what they do next.

This goes to show, just how slow that mail is for the primary when the majority of pieces that Chris Nguyen and I have both seen are for a race that doesn’t even exist yet. Hopefully things start to pick up here with absentees set to drop shortly.

CD 45 Mailbox: Campbell In The Mail First

We have our first mailer in the newly drawn 45th Congressional District from Congressman John Campbell. I expect that we will see quite a few more from him.

CD-39: Ed Royce in the Mail

Posted by Former Blogger Chris Emami on April 6, 2012

I received my first political mailer of this primary election cycle on Wednesday from Congressman Ed Royce.  It includes a pre-filled permanent vote-by-mail ballot (permanent absentee ballot) application.  The application requires no postage but is sent to Royce’s campaign office.

The piece emphasizes California’s probable relevance in the Republican presidential primary and urges voters to take their chance to defeat Barack Obama and stop Nancy Pelosi from becoming Speaker of the House.  Royce signs it with “Vice-Chairman, NRCC” as his title.

The piece is 8.5″ x 11″ and becomes 17″ x 11″ when opened up.

Ugh OCEA Back In The Mail Again

Posted by Former Blogger Chris Emami on March 15, 2012

I am getting sick of all the junk mail being sent to my mailbox this early in campaign season. OCEA has yet again put out a hit piece on Anaheim Councilmembers Harry Sidhu, Kris Murray, and Gail Eastman. Needless to say this is getting really old , really fast. Here is a copy of the mailer that arrived in my mailbox yesterday:

The strategy just simply does not make sense to me. They are obviously looking to win 2 seats in the November election with what appears to be the slate of John Leos and Jose Moreno (not the same one trying to run for Assembly.

I guarantee you that they will beat Sidhu who is not on the ballot due to term limits, but good luck beating Murray or Eastman when they won’t even be on the ballot until 2014

OCEA Back In Anaheim Mailboxes

Posted by Former Blogger Chris Emami on March 1, 2012

Things are really starting to get heated in Anaheim in a war between OCEA and the Anaheim Chamber of commerce over a City Council vote to give a tax break to a developer looking to build a hotel at the Anaheim Garden Walk.

We first covered the story with a post that I made here talking about what had been taking place prior to us launching the blog.

Chris Nguyen then had a blog post about a robocall that OCEA put out encouraging Anaheim residents to show up to a town hall meeting being organized by KABC 7. I followed up later that day with our first post of a mail piece that went out attacking the three Councilmembers.

I then posted about the Anaheim Chamber of Commerce then fired back at OCEA with a mail piece that supported the three Councilmembers.

Finally Chris Nguyen posted another robocall from OCEA that went out to Anaheim residents urging them to show up at the Anaheim City Council meeting that night.

Now OCEA is back in the mail with another mail piece attacking Harry Sidhu, Kris Murray, and Gail Eastman.

The Anaheim Chamber Strikes Back

Posted by Former Blogger Chris Emami on February 21, 2012

It appears that Anaheim organizations are not going to sit on their hands and allow the OCEA to attack Councilmembers Harry Sidhu, Gail Eastman, and Kris Murray without a fight. Recently OCEA has put out a robocall trying to get residents to show up to a town hall meeting and also sent out a mailer hitting them on a vote they made to give a tax break to a developer looking to build a hotel in the Anaheim Garden Walk.

The Anaheim Chamber of Commerce has come out with a mailer encouraging Anaheim residents to come out in support of the Councimembers that have come under fire with this mailer:

This could lead to a big fight leading up to this election between these two warring factions. It is important to note that attacking Eastman and Murray is not a great idea for this election since they are not up until 2014.

Also quite interesting is that it appears that the Labor Unions are not in agreement on this issue either as OCEA is coming out attacking the Councilmembers but yet it appears that Patrick Kelly with the Teamsters has come out in support of the Councilmembers according to the mailer from the Anaheim Chamber of Commerce.

Things are starting to heat up in Anaheim.

OCEA Hitting Anaheim Mailboxes as Well

Posted by Former Blogger Chris Emami on February 13, 2012

You may have read the article that Nguyen wrote this morning that had the OCEA robocall up urging people to show up to a townhall forum to discuss the recent vote that took place regarding the hotel tax subsidy.

It appears that answering machines are not their only mode of communication to the people of Anaheim as they are also trying to reach people through mail as well. I have already received three mailers prior to today, but unfortunately OC Political did not yet exist to pot the mailers up for all to see. Saturday I received the fourth mailer from OCEA, this time without a picture of John Leos on it and also targeting a totally separate issue.

Mailer looked as follows:

Clearly OCEA is targeting Anaheim in the November election with John Leos and a second candidate. This is a very opportune time to target the largest city on Orange County with Harry Sidhu and Lorri Galloway both termed out.

It appears that November campaign season has started earlier than expected which could make for a lot of mail.
