No On 29 Mailbox: The Campaign Keeps Consistent Message

Posted by Former Blogger Chris Emami on May 24, 2012

The No on 29 folks are doing a great job of getting their message out to the public. I received my fourth mailer so far this cycle from the campaign. As I have stated before I am just not a fan of the plain style of the mailer, but the messaging is excellent.

It is always a tough task to convince voters that raising taxes on cigarettes is not a good idea, and I don’t know that all of this mail will be enough to get the job done.

Slate Mailer Mailbox: Save Prop 13

Posted by Former Blogger Chris Emami on May 23, 2012

A good slate mailer has finally arrived. The Save Prop 13 mailer is one of the best in the business and it is one of the most common ones I see at my polling place when I go vote. Jim Lacy always does a fantastic job and I believe that his slate mailers will be the ones that survive even if candidates do realize what a scam slates are.

Slate Mailer Mailbox: Budget Watchdogs Part 2

Posted by Former Blogger Chris Emami on May 22, 2012

As if the first 1 wasn’t bad enough another “Budget Watchdogs” piece arrived in the mail later last week. It might actually be worse than the one I posted yesterday.

The slate mail business is going to slowly start to disappear here very shortly, for a number of reasons. Initiatives being moved to November will make it almost impossible in a June election. Also it is clear that with so many new slates arriving voters do not trust these advertisements anymore.

Here is the piece:

Slate Mailer Mailbox: Budget Watchdogs

Posted by Former Blogger Chris Emami on May 21, 2012

This slate mail piece arrived in the mail last week called “Budget Watchdogs.” It used to go by the name “California Voter Guide” when it went out in previous years and I must say that I am not impressed. Tim Carey charges an arm and a leg for his slates and they appear to get worse every election.

Form your own opinion on it:

AD 73 Central Committee Mailbox: Mary Young Too

Posted by Former Blogger Chris Emami on May 14, 2012

Apparently the Mary Young for Central Committee fundraiser that I mentioned earlier raised enough money for her to run a Central Committee mailer. The good news for me (living in AD 68) is that AD 68 is not the only Central Committee race to have been taken over by insanity. I am still waiting on those TV commercials to start popping up:

Slate Mailer Mailbox: Lew Uhler’s National Tax Limitation Committee Slate Mailer

Posted by Former Blogger Chris Emami on May 14, 2012

Some people like slate mailers and others don’t, I would argue that most voters don’t know that candidates actually pay to get onto them. Slate mailers used to be a lot more effective in the past when very few of them existed back in the days of Willie Brown. With over 30 slate mailers available for purchase just in Orange County, it is tough to get a clear and consistent message across to voters.

We are posting our first slate mailer that has gone out and it comes from Landslide Communications run by former Dana Point Councilman Jim Lacy. The first of his slate mailers to go out is the National Tax Limitation Committee Newsletter:

AD 68 Central Committee Mailbox: Voigts Joins The Madness

Posted by Former Blogger Chris Emami on May 14, 2012

Things just get crazier and crazier in the Central Committee races. We have seen the following so far:

1) Central Committee Fundraiser for Mary Young candidate for AD 73 Central Committee.
2) Central Committee Signs for Noel Stone Parrish candidate for AD 68 Central Committee.
3) Hit piece by Todd Spitzer against Deborah Pauly in the AD 68 Central Committee race.

Apparently AD 68 wins as the wildest and craziest race as a reader has just sent us another mailer that has been sent out in the AD 68 Central Committee race. This time Lake Forest City Councilman Scott Voigts is in the mail with the following piece.

I guess having a handful of candidates that are elected officials will make any race more interesting, but this AD 68 Central Committee race is just bizarre. Candidates are pouring in a decent amount of money to try to win one of the six seats available.

Voigts is positioning himself well as he also appeared on the National Tax Limitation Committee Slate Mailer which I will post later on this evening.

Third Supervisorial District: Todd Spitzer in the Mail

Posted by Chris Nguyen on May 9, 2012

Excluding the Anaheim TOT mail (which has nothing to do with the June election), I received my fifth mailer of the primary election cycle yesterday.  The first mailer was from Congressman Ed Royce’s campaign on April 4,  the second one was from Todd Spitzer’s campaign for the Third Supervisorial District on April 19, the third one was another Royce piece on April 28, the fourth one was another Spitzer piece on May 1.  This mailer is the third I’ve received from Spitzer’s campaign, and the fifth I’ve received from any campaign this cycle.

This piece is obviously geared toward Republican voters.

The side with the address label has the two-star Republican elephant along with a large font highlighting Spitzer’s “Local Elected Official of the Year” award 12 years ago from the OCGOP.  It also has a picture of Spitzer with OCGOP Chairman Scott Baugh.  “Todd Spitzer” is the largest font on the page, is part of his campaign logo, and is repeated again in the caption under the picture with Baugh, thereby repeating his name thrice as a way to reinforce name ID even among voters who won’t flip the piece over to read the other side (I guess technically it’s four times since the paid for by message has his name, but that’s in the fine print).

The other side of the piece emphasizes conservative Republican values.  It includes a big CRA logo (with the official three-star Republican elephant) highlighting Spitzer’s CRA endorsement, including a quote from CRA Vice President (and OC Political blogger) Craig Alexander.  The piece also includes bullet points listing Republican stances on taxes, pensions, and crime, along with Spitzer’s membership on the Republican Central Committee and “A” rating from the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association.  This side of the piece also repeats Spitzer’s name in large type thrice, again reinforcing name ID even among voters who won’t read the piece and who received the piece in the mail with the address/postage side face down.

A subtle touch is the photo which has a clearly visible North Orange County Conservative Coalition logo on the banner behind Spitzer at the speech he was giving.  A casual reader might not notice the logo.  It does, however, catch the eye of anyone who recognizes the logo.

This is the first mailer from any campaign in quite a while that doesn’t include the needless logos that I admonished campaigns about in this post.

This is the first Spitzer mailer I’ve received that isn’t a four-pager that opens up.  This is a two-sided 8.5″ x 11″ piece.

OCBE 3 Mailbox: Williams In The Mail & Press Release

Posted by Former Blogger Chris Emami on May 7, 2012

In the Orange County Board of Education, Trustee Area 3 race Ken Williams has had the first mailer go out to voters today (Full Disclosure:Custom Campaigns is the lead consultant on this race).

It is always tough to do mail in a race for a seat that is the size of a County Supervisors but draws far less attention. Here is the mailer which is on a 8.5 x 5.5 size piece of cardstock:

California Mailbox: No On 29 Strikes First

Posted by Former Blogger Chris Emami on May 4, 2012

I received this mailer earlier this week from the No on Proposition 29 campaign. It will need to be the first of many mailers and TV commercials if they want to win. Generally California voters tend to always vote yes on ta increases on cigarettes and I do believe if given the opportunity they would vote to ban smoking altogether.

The mailer shows up as an 8.5 x 11 piece and opens like a book into an 8.5 x 22 piece. It is a very well done piece that might be able to swing some undecided voters. Without further adieu see the four panels of the mailer below:
