OC Board Of Supervisors Votes Down Term Limits Amendment

Posted by Former Blogger Chris Emami on March 1, 2012

In a 2-3 vote on Tuesday the Orange County Board of Supervisors voted down a term limits amendment that would have changed the consecutive terms that a candidate was allowed to serve in the OC Board of Supes from 2 terms to 3 terms. The amendment would have been placed before the voters and likely would have passed in my opinion based on the way that it was worded.

The amendment would have also changed the current procedure where a Supervisor can serve 2 consecutive terms sit-out a term and then run again. In my opinion this was not enough to make this worth passing as I do not see a need to give Supervisors an extra term.

My understanding is that Flash Report author Jon Fleischman spoke at the meeting and came out against the proposal. Apparently based on the way the proposal was worded it appears that it may have reset the clock on terms, which potentially could have allowed John Moorlach to serve a total of 5 terms if that indeed turned out to be true.

The votes in favor of the proposal were John Moorlach and Shawn Nelson. In opposition to the proposal were Janet Nguyen, Bill Campbell, and Pat Bates.

More on term limits tomorrow…
