ORANGE COUNTY, CA – Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas filed his declaration of candidacy for re-election. He filed his paperwork and took the candidacy oath this morning at the Orange County Registrar of Voters.

Before the filing period opened, Rackauckas raised a record‑breaking $419,000 toward his re‑election bid this year in one night. The gala event, held at the Balboa Bay Club in Newport Beach, was attended by hundreds of enthusiastic, committed supporters of Rackauckas.

“I am very humbled to have this kind of strong support from so many different segments of the Orange County community,” said District Attorney Rackauckas. “This is an endorsement for the hard working men and women of the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, who work tirelessly to make sure that Orange County remains a place where people can feel safe to live, work and play. We have particularly targeted dangerous gang members and violent sex offenders to keep our County safe.”

In preparing for his bid for a fifth term as Orange County’s top prosecutor, Rackauckas has also amassed a large and impressive bipartisan list of endorsers, including Sheriff Sandra Hutchens; Supervisors Shawn Nelson, Patricia Bates, and Janet Nguyen, Congressmen Dana Rohrabacher and Ed Royce; State Senators Lou Correa, Bob Huff, and Mimi Walters; Assemblymembers Travis Allen, Tom Daly, Curt Hagman, Diane Harkey, and Don Wagner; Board of Equalization Member Michelle Steel; Republican Party of Orange County Chairman Scott Baugh, and former Democratic Party of Orange County Chair Frank Barbaro. Rackauckas also enjoys the support of numerous local city council members from all across the county, along with numerous prosecutors, law enforcement, and victims’ rights leaders.

“Tony Rackauckas, who for more than a quarter of a century has been working to bring better balance to our justice system, has not just talked the talk, he has walked the walk,” said longtime victim advocate Collene Campbell, National Chair of Force 100 and Founder and President of Memory of Victims Everywhere (M.O.V.E).

In addition to having the financial resources to fund a countywide re‑election effort, the Rackauckas campaign has also secured placement on 17 of the most prominent slate mailers, which will produce millions of pieces of mail sent to Orange County’s Republican, Democratic, and No Party Preference voters.

“Tony Rackauckas is a well-respected professional who people know truly has been fighting for public safety for more than four decades,” said Senior Republican strategist Wayne Johnson. “He’s a career prosecutor, not a politician looking for higher office, and I think that’s what people are looking for in a District Attorney. Having worked for hundreds of political candidates over the years, I can say with certainty that Rackauckas couldn’t be in a stronger position as he approaches his re‑election.”

AD-55: Craig Young Drops Out

Posted by Newsletter Reprint on February 18, 2014

This afternoon, Yorba Linda Mayor Craig Young publicly announced that he was dropping out of the 55th Assembly District race. With Young’s exit, there remain three candidates left in the AD-55 race: Walnut Valley Unified School District Trustee Phillip Chen, Diamond Bar City Councilwoman Ling-Ling Chang, and Diamond Bar Mayor Pro Tem Steve Tye. Here’s the announcement Young sent out:

Today, I am stepping away from my State Assembly race to focus 100% of available energy and attention on defeating the special interests working against Yorba Linda taxpayers.

When I decided to run to succeed Curt Hagman in the State Assembly, it was to pick up where he will leave off fighting against the out-of-control state mandates and reckless spending in Sacramento.  My desire is to stop policies like the early release of hardened criminals into our communities, to protect our property rights, and to stop the practice of raising taxes rather than making tough decisions.

However, narrow special interests right here in Yorba Linda are working aggressively to undue the progress we’ve made moving our city forward – and they’re doing this at great risk and expense to our taxpayers.

Two years ago, Mayor Pro Tem Gene Hernandez, Tom Lindsey and I campaigned against a council that refused to put our community ahead of their own agendas. Fortunately, working together, we have made tremendous progress in getting the city back on track:

  1. Town Center is now taking significant steps forward,
  2. Crippling debt has been paid off saving Yorba Linda millions in non-budgeted deficit spending,
  3. And for the first time your City Council is actively addressing the substantial unfunded pension, health and capital liabilities that will handicap our future.

This is great progress and I am very proud to have been a part of the accomplishments.  In fact I have never been more optimistic and energized about our future as long as we stay this course.

While I feel there is much good I can do in Sacramento, I refuse to pursue that good at the expense of our progress here in Yorba Linda. My first commitment is to our community as an elected leader.

Therefore, I am stepping away from the State Assembly race and focusing my entire attention on assuring Yorba Linda defeats the abusive recall and re-elects Tom Lindsey and another fiscally conservative councilmember this November.

The State still needs fixing. Government is too big, too controlling, and way too expensive. However, there are now three candidates vying for the State seat and I have become convinced that within this full slate there is a candidate who will represent our conservative interests.
But rest assured, while I am focused on making certain Yorba Linda is on sound footing, I will not lose sight of holding accountable those in Sacramento who are charged to represent us.

I have been humbled by the support of so many people in Yorba Linda and throughout the area.  There will be other opportunities for me to serve in different capacities, but at this time, my responsibilities as mayor takes top priority.

Thank you for your support and thank you to all who continue to stand with me in protecting the rights, pocket books and quality of life of Yorba Linda residents.

District Attorney Clears Supervisor Janet Nguyen

Posted by Newsletter Reprint on February 7, 2014

This press release came over the wire from the Janet Nguyen for State Senate campaign about an hour ago:

District Attorney Clears Supervisor Janet Nguyen of Politically Motivated Complaints

Garden Grove, CA – – Stephen Larson, an attorney for County Supervisor and CalOptima Board Member Janet Nguyen, announced today that the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, in correspondence prepared by Senior Assistant District Attorney Michael Lubinski, has confirmed in writing that it has completed its investigation regarding conflict-of-interest allegations concerning Supervisor Nguyen.

According to Mr. Lubinski, the District Attorney has concluded — after conducting witness interviews and reviewing campaign finance documents, contracts, and voting records — “that no criminal conflict of interest laws were violated by Janet Nguyen” in her position as a CalOptima Board member.

Although Supervisor Nguyen has always been confident that nothing improper ever occurred and that the complaints submitted to the District Attorney were politically motivated, she is pleased to receive this written confirmation from the District Attorney and, through that office, the FPPC.

Orange Planning Commission Controversy Makes National Headlines

Posted by Newsletter Reprint on November 19, 2013

The controversy in the City of Orange over the Planning Commission appointment of Michael Merino makes national headlines, as it was covered by William Bigelow at Breitbart.com this weekend…

CA Veteran Denied Reinstatement on City Commission After Deployment

by WILLIAM BIGELOW 17 Nov 2013

In a rather fishy development, Captain Michael Merino, a member of the city of Orange’s five-member planning commission and a registered Republican, was denied the chance for reinstatement on Tuesday after the Navel reservist took a two-year leave of absence when he was deployed to serve at Guantanamo Bay. The Democratic mayor of Orange, Tita Smith, is refusing to nominate Merino for the now-vacant post. Merino also served in the 1991 liberation of Kuwait and the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

Councilman Denis Bilodeau, also a Republican, is calling for the City Council to bring up the subject for consideration on Tuesday November 26th, with local veterans groups expected to attend.

Merino served on the Orange Planning Commission from 2006 through 2011.

Smith said Merino’s term expired during his deployment and because he had been on the panel more than five years, a new person was needed to replace him.

Bilodeau stated, “I am heartbroken that Capt. Merino answered his call of duty, and we are not honoring that by giving him his position back.”

Merino has asserted that he thought his job on the commission would be protected by federal regulations covering military personnel, but smith said the federal provisions do not cover the jobs on the commission.

Merino, who had run twice for city council, was disillusioned, saying, “I am disappointed by the council’s actions. I have no intention of running for council again. I don’t understand the politics behind this decision.”

San Francisco Chronicle Interviews Young Kim, Republican Candidate for 65th Assembly District

Posted by Newsletter Reprint on October 23, 2013

Joe Garofoli from the San Francisco Chronicle snagged the first on-camera media interview with Young Kim after she announced her candidacy for the 65th Assembly District.  The interview is posted on Young Kim’s official Assembly campaign web site and the San Francisco Chronicle web site as part of a Chronicle article entitled, “‘I will kick her butt’ promises GOP Assembly candidate. Oh, it’s on (VIDEO).”

Here is the video of that interview:

Greg Diamond at the Orange Juice Blog published a complete transcript of the video for those of you who’d rather read the interview than watch it:

[TRANSCRIPT by Orange Juice Blog Transcriptions Services.

Orange Juice Blog Transcriptionists: “For when you Karen Huff to sin the furry vest”]

SFC: OK, we’re here at the Republican convention here in Anaheim.  I’m with Young Kim, and she is running for the Assembly District in Orange County.  And again — a bit of unusual candidate.  When I was at your intro the other day, several people said: … she’s … KOREAN!  She’s a woman!  She’s a Republican!  That’s, like, an unusual thing.  But you say this is also a political advantage — that’s why you were recruited, too.  Tell us about that.

YK: Yes.  The 65th Assembly District represents the north and west Orange County.

SFC: Yeah.  [Note: further mm-hmms and such omitted.]

YK: Fullerton, Buena Park, La [Palma], Cypress, Stanton, and West Anaheim.  It is traditionally a very conservative district.  The current State Assemblywoman, Sharon Quirk-Silva, did not win that seat.  Unfortunately the Republican lost it in the last election cycle, but it was a bad year for all Republicans.  Now, having said that, that win for Sharon Quirk-Silva gave the State Legislature a 2/3 supermajority.  That is bad for us in Orange County, especially when the district, in the last redistricting cycle, has turned into 1/3 Asian, 1/3 Hispanic, 1/3 Caucasian.  She’s Hispanic; I’m Asian.  She’s Latina Democrat; I’m Asian Republican.  She’s a woman; I’m a woman.

OK.  She had the advantage of being a minority, a woman, and she went after our former State Assemblyman, Chris Norby, but she doesn’t have all the flaws that they went after him against Young Kim, because I don’t have any flaws.

SFC:  [Starts cracking up laughing.]

YK:  I am going to infiltrate into Sharon Quirk-Silva’s comfort zone — and I’m going to take her voters away.

SFC:  And what is her “comfort zone”?  What do you say –

YK:  Woman!  Minority!  She’s not going to claim all those to her benefit, because I am going after the minority group that is hugely popular, Asian Americans — they come out and vote!  Unlike the Hispanics.

SFC:  Right.

YK:  They will contribute to a candidate they believe is the best shot at getting that seat back — and that Asian Americans will do that.  They have already proven that, for me, in a short period of time, in two fundraisers, I have have raised over $300,000 –

SFC:  $300,000 in a few months.  You have worked for Ed Royce, Congressman, for twenty years.

YK:  Yes [Note: more “yes” and other interrupted cross-speak omitted.]

SFC: You know this district backwards and forwards, because you’ve worked for him in the district, in and around the district, for two decades.

YK:  And like I said: when I say she doesn’t represent the interests and the values of the district, the district is traditionally very conservative, faith-based community.

SFC:  You are very conservative socially –

YK:  Very conservative, socially as well, and I do not subscribe to what she believes in, such as the transgender legislation that she worked hard to get it passed — it doesn’t reflect the values.  I would not have even entertained such a thought.  When the vote comes up, on the vote, I would say: “What a stupid, crazy bill.  Who introduced it?”  I would say that.  I would not vote for something like that.”

SFC:  I think that these debates that you two will have should be on statewide television.  I think these will be very entertaining debates, uh buh this is — this is going to be great stuff, and, uh, we’ll see you down the road –

YK: Thank you.

SFC:  – it’s gonna be, it’s gonna be one of the hot races in California, lot of money, lot of attention on both sides, and we’ll see you soon!

YK:  I’m aware of that, so I’m ready, I already rolled up my sleeves, I’m ready, and I’m already … working hard.  I’m hitting the ground, 100%, and I will kick her butt.

SFC:  WOW!  All right.  Thank you.
